I won’t be holding my breath.
He loses his shit when people ask him what day it is…His answer usually involves Liverpool and Klopp.
I had a lot of time for him, but not now anymore. Collaborating with a murderous regime is borderline condoning all the murders. He’s a grown-up man and knows this very well, but still, he took the job. So, he can go to hell as far as I’m concerned.
Steve Bruce perhaps deserves some credit for walking out on Newcastle after the takeover, I think it took the owners by surprise and they didn’t appear to have anyone lined up did they?
Similar. I can see it from the side of being a fantastic opportunity but he’s got to know who he’s getting into bed with.
But for me you really have to look at the PL giving the whole thing the green light. Chelsea first and they have created a monster
As someone said on Twitter if you look glacial compared to the UK government then something isn’t right.
It’s not a job I’d have taken, as obviously the Saudi government is one of the worst human rights abusing regimes there is. With that said, the British government takes billions from the Saudis in arms deals, and there are over 200 British companies doing business with Saudi Arabia in strategic partnerships. The Premier League is now one of those companies and has welcomed them with open arms to the glitz and glamour, doing them a solid in exchange for lots of money… I have started seeing Aramco branding, for example, associated with the Premier League.
Eddie Howe took the money and the job, so the questioning is understandable, but it seems unfair to hold him to a higher moral standard than the Premier League, and the British Government.
Who is actually doing that though? I don’t see many posters on here making the argument for selling arms to Saudi Arabia.
Several people are questioning Howe, an interviewer asked him about the 81 death penalty deaths, and several in this thread are commenting about how he has gone down in their estimation for taking the job.
Against that backdrop I am saying that Eddie Howe is way down the food chain, and if we want to criticize dealings with Saudi, go all the way to the government level. They are elected officials acting in our stead, willingly turning a blind eye in exchange for money. After government, at the company level, the Premier League is one of about 200 companies doing business with the Saudis. Eddie Howe works for one of those companies.
While this is true, it is important that we don’t hold back on anyone where it can place pressure on their awful regime to be kicked out of football. So that includes players, fans and managers - ramping up the pressure on them is the best way to increase pressure politically and impact the EPL executive and government. Ultimately Newsandcastle need to start to stink if we want to see any change. If that means there is collateral reputation damage to individuals - be they managers, players or fans - then that is okay. I’d like to see opposing fans displaying ‘murderers’ and any other anti Saudi regime and crown banners so that the PL is drawn in to difficult discussions about ‘protecting their content’ or the likes of MBS recognise that it’s not a good investment in terms of publicity.
That’s a reasonable point, cheers.
The calculus in letting the Saudis in must have gone something like this:
“We know they are dodgy, but look at all the money they will bring. We know we will take some flak for this, but we aren’t the only ones taking money from the Saudis. It will all blow over quickly and the news cycle will move on.”
So the suggestion seems to be to not let it blow over, but to continue to kick up a fuss, in the hope that their calculus proves to be mistaken, and/or the sportswashing desired by the Saudis backfires, as they continue to receive high profile criticism?
With regard to keeping up the pressure, I love the aim but I’m not confident.
Abu Dhabi are dirty as you like, and the ONLY worthwhile story around Man City is their financial cheating. That should continually be shouted from the rooftops, but unfortunately it is a footnote in the media. Apart from a brief period where it was in the spotlight, it has all blown over and all the likes of Lineker and co can do is fawn over the football and the players. It will be sickening to watch them sign Haaland in the summer.
There you go.
I don’t like anything about Newcastle, but they’re not being relegated now, so I hope they batter Everton on Thursday.
Awwww poor widdle Eddie Howe, thought he’d just waltz in take a massive oil state paycheque and that would be the end of it… no sympathy at all for the cunt.
Answer sounds very scripted.
Spent last night hoping that by some miracle both teams could lose the same match so both them and Everton get closer to relegation.
Is that the most blatant piece of sports washing yet? Away shirt to match the national team shirt of the country of their owners.
I can’t believe there are fans defending it and some even revelling in it. Much like Chelsea and City fans it hasn’t taken some of them long to put morals aside in the pursuit of buying some success.
