They’ve been hemorrhaging money for years and so have long been susceptible to losing players they’d otherwise want to keep if good money offers come in. The main thing that has limited that has been the lack of quality players other big spending clubs might want.
So there is definitely an easily explainable scenario for them letting him go. But this is also not something I’d rule out.
