I actually thought you meant the President of Brazil.
How is it taken in isolation when it is the fundamental premise you keep coming back to? That there is a system that defines the number of players you use to press. If that isn’t what you mean then I dont know what people are supposed to take from these repeated references.
We are doing it poorly there is no question about that. The stat in the recent Clearly video about us being top 4 for pressing attempts and bottom for recoveries is absolutely shocking. There are clearly structural issues at play contributing to that which Im sure we can all agree with even if we dont on the nature of what they are.
I don’t want to hear anyone saying Gerrard is the answer. It speaks a lot that he isn’t assisting a top tier manager right now to improve his credentials. He’s not working at it. He’ll be a feel good story for a week until we realize “holy shit, he couldn’t hack it in the fucking Saudi Pro League.”
I don’t think anyone serious is suggesting that
Why, if that is to the contrary of the sports development of the club ?
I realise this is just sports, but I am kind of close to running military analogies regarding armies and generals here (with offensives, culmination of said offensive and own losses versus enemy losses, CoGs, Decisive Points and enemy counter offensives). But I respect the real world a tad too much to do so (it’s just football after all).
Still, it is tempting, because if it’s important (and tbh, we are at least talking about a hell of a lot of money, and not only feelings of fans), then you remove a leader that is not working, before the damage becomes too great and you lose too much progress or is set back too far to regain previous position.
Maybe he should not be sacked at this second, but if the trend continues, you have to send in a fire brigade and remove the leader. While relegation seems an impossibility, damage to the machine over time, as well as further damage to morale, is not to be underestimated.
It was taken in isolationas I covered everything in the post that you mentioned and was correct in what Jurgen and Arne predominantly use in their pressing setup and even mentioned that a midfielder in Jurgen’s system would jump if the right situation was right.
I totally agree that we aren’t pressing right and also explained why I think it isn’t working.
I think we both are in agreement that this comes down to the coaching, but the effort from some individuals and the timing or poor quality of challenging for the ball aren’t helping.
I’d get Phil Thompson back in before that ![]()
Brutal, but on what we have seen so far, quite possible.
So I don’t know if this is a language issue, but my point is there is no such thing as pressing with 3 players as a tactic, nor with 4. Not with any set number. It is a full team tactic
You knew exactly what I meant with a 3 or 4 man press as that is what is used to describe the press from the front.
Just being an arse now.
Well quite clearly not. It’s a bizarre way of describing anything, but fair enough
So you never hear pundits say they press with a 4 or 3 talking about the front men pressing?
shit.
just the mer mention of Mane got me thinking…
we’ve gone from Mane to Gakpo via Diaz… thatsone sliding scale.
Mane is alot more dynamic and exciting to watch but in terms of output I don’t see a big drop. 48 goal involvment last 2 seasons Vs Mane 54 last 2 seasons with us.
assuming they ar Diaz stats?
Doaz was a lot closer to Sadio than Cody in his manner on the pitch
Oops sorry that was Gakpo Vs Mane stats
I am more excited to watch Mane, that intensity is always there but in terms of output, it’s not a huge drop to be fair to Gakpo. It just seems like it optics wise
Manè was a very special player and I was very sad when he left. The great thing about him is you just didn’t have a clue what he was going to do when on the ball. This meant defenders stood off him.
We have not been able to replace what he offered. Neither Diaz nor Gakpo come/came to his ankles, it was a massive drop off on the left.
And when you talk about pressing from the front, Mané would start with the opposition keeper. Force them to make a suboptimal kick from the back.
