Arne Slot - Head Coach (Part 1)

Yeah. I think the issue is less about whether the title is a “flash in the pan” or whatever - it most certainly is not. There’s no such thing as a Premier League winner that’s a “flash in a pan.”

I think the better question - one that you’re driving at - is whether the 2024-25 title confirmed that Slot is a great manager capable of pulling us out of adversity and finding creative solutions to the problems we’re facing.

And that’s where I’m inclined to agree that the title gives him some credit, but not enough for me to be convinced that he’s the man who can pull us out of the funk we’re in.

The best managers are those that raise standards in the face of adversity. Slot did not face much adversity last year on the pitch. This year he has faced a huge amount of adversity, and he has yet to demonstrate that he has the ability to pull us out of it.

I hope he figures it out, because I like Slot quite a bit. But I’m very concerned about seeing the same issues arise again and again.

Well no one wants to hear them

I sure as hell don’t! But you’re wrong. Anyway. Sorry we digress off topic…the forum police will spank our bottoms for this!!

3, us, Leicester, Blackburn.

Kenny at least walked away from Blackburn and his replacement just was not up to it and was never really #1 material. Im pretty sure Chelsea fired 2 separate league winning managers within a season of them winning the title

I don’t see the relationship of a CEO running a company vs a football coach.
Yes they’re both managers but the specific operational variables they deal with are vastly different.

 Surely you are not serious

It’ll be 4 next year after Arsenal win the league.

For the record, I wasn’t referring to the team with the flash in the pan characterisation, but to Slot’s first few months in charge.

It feels a bit strange posting this here, but the rumors from Austria about Glasner are getting louder. I just saw that Austrian tabloids are even reporting that Glasner’s move to us is already a done deal and will happen this winter. They cite sources close to him, and the “well-informed Indykaila account” is also supposedly reporting on it now. The fact that the Austrians are citing Indy as a source is, of course, somewhat amusing, but otherwise they’re relying mainly on voices from Glasner’s inner circle, and you never know with those.

I fear the rumors will only die down if Arne manages to stabilize us again.

I wouldn’t take that too seriously!!:rofl: We would need permission to speak with him etc so it’s clearly not a done deal. I’d be looking for someone who has already been there, done it and wonbit with at least one top club personally.

I’m baffled by many of his recent decisions but Slot overcame the odds to help us breeze to the title.

So we have a manager here who could be top but is facing a managerial crisis in a situation he has never faced before… i.e., he isn’t the complete deal manager.

Hampered by:
a) a very unbalanced squad
b) unfamiliar squad
c) an entire missing / underperforming right side

I would say he needs help more than a replacement and we could be challenging again.

Starting with a proper right CB, a proper wide player and as I don’t see much happening there: Bajcetic healthy to give MacAllister a break here and there.

I’m struggling to remember all those second place finishes for Leicester and Blackburn.

What years were they again?

at some point slot needs to stop talking:Slot on Isak: "It is obvious and clear that we have not the profile of Jacob Murphy for example available at this moment at this time.”

I can see it now. He’s ready to sign, doing the exit video etc, before Palace decide they can’t find a replacement and the deal is off…

I’ve already said that Slot wouldn’t be at Liverpool next season and nothing I’ve seen in the meantime suggests I will be wrong about it - not because I can look into the future but because I don’t remember any coach in world football turning this kind of form around. In fact, if it had happened at any other club in the world bar Man United, he would have been gone by now.

I realised at some point the other day that all three coaches I was looking at as his possible successors were Spanish: Iraola, Fabregas and Alonso. Even depending on their availability (which won’t be before the summer unless Real Madrid primadonnas turn on Alonso because he wants them to track back), none of them are without risks (though Alonso would likely make the most sense here). So, I think this world of football hurt will continue and that we will have a season not too dissimilar from the one Man United had before this one - only without a cup final.

I had to find the exact transcript of this to see the context. I’m… I’m not really sure what to make of this. This either hints at a disconnect with upper hierarchy (which I doubt) or some belated, cryptic suggestion that transfer decisions from last summer were made with his reluctant agreement, maybe with club’s financial interests in mind (sell Diaz when his value is the highest thus far, keep Salah to sell him to Saudis for major profit, extend Gakpo to protect his transfer value next summer).

Why can not Slot train Gakpo to pass to Kerkez/Robbo on the overlap?
It’s not like Gomez can not cross either.
He’s sounding like a real plonker to me!

He’s probably trained them to use Kerkez as a decoy so Gakpo can cut inside and shoot which in fairness is one of his better attributes.

Problem is, with the way teams play vs us, byline cut backs are one of the best ways to score from vs low blocks
