Very sad to say but when three dozen are officially reported as dead and 700 injured within an hour or so of the earthquake happening, then you know that the final figure will be a lot higher. Currently the official number of dead is close to a thousand.

My heart goes out to the people of Venezuela..

The way they are talking about thousands unaccounted for reminded me the catastrophic chain reaction condos/apartments fire in Hong Kong about the missing number of people. Heart breaking for the families.

There has been a fatal shooting in Stade in North Niedersachsen. Reports of 5 dead. No idea what this is about (other than guns).

Shots fired at youth facility

According to the current state of the investigation, a homicide occurred at a youth care facility on Dankersstraße. A police spokesperson confirmed in response to a dpa inquiry that the site houses residential groups for mothers and children. According to its website, the facility specializes in the care and support of young mothers and their children. The exact connection between the youth facility and the incident remains unclear at this time.

I’ve seen a few stories like this on the BBC and other news services. I’m wondering if they are using this as an angle to increase support for a national ID card scheme, because people don’t appear that bothered about identity theft.

It’s extremely sad that something like this could happen anywhere, but especially in a city which prides itself on its support for people of all sexualities. Without wishing to rush to conclusions, it’s likely that the perpetrator is a young man who’s been brainwashed by some hateful ideology yet again. It’s depressing, but Berlin’s spirit will not be destroyed by this.

The perpetrator in the Berlin CSD attack has been shot dead by police:

Seemingly this was in the Spandau area. We popped over to the Netherlands this afternoon and noticed a police checkpoint at the border, so they weren’t taking any chances (I assume all border crossings were affected)

Well there is presumably his browser history to examine, although they won’t know what was going through his mind at theend, other than a few rounds from a Heckler & Koch that is.

Apparently he was known to authorities as an extreme Islamist since he was 16, was being surveilled, tried to go to Syria to join IS and was just recently convicted for preparing an act of terror. But released on parole and supposed to attain deradicalisation training.
I’d say fricking unbelievable, but unfortunately it isn"t. There are limits to how liberal a crime/justice system can afford to be.
