Cars, Driving And All Things Automotive

I don’t want to, it’s dangerous and should be banned.

It’s like a motorcyclist thinking it’s ok to undertake you so close to a junction when you may or not may need to get off.

Surprised to see @cynicaloldgit hasn’t posted in this one yet

Being brutally honest it was simply the best car I’ve ever owned. Not much in the way of fancy gadgets it was just a great car to drive. Had a nasty habit of wanting to put you through a hedge backwards though. It was grit your teeth through the under steer or ease off and prepare to be facing the wrong way.

I also love vans or similar. You’re just able to do stuff with a van. I will forever own one if given the choice.

I had a Citreon GSA automatic for a short time, definitely my favorite and wished I’d had the money at the time to repair it and keep it on the road. Was offered an Opel Kadett (corsa to most of you) so scrapped it.
I’ve had a Toyota picnic since '99 great car except after taking it to Toyota ‘garages’ always had problems just after, do they know what they are doing? Thankfully it seems indestructable and I have plenty of time to find what the garage broke.

TVR Tuscan was/is a lovely car!

I’ve done a lot of miles in vans. A nice SUV is more comfortable to drive but give me a Transit to do 1000miles any day.

A good mate of mine has a transit Torneo, basically the people carrier version. Kind of jealous to be honest and quite impressed with it. They’ve come a long way. Really comfortable, refined etc. We did an overnight drive to Heathrow in it earlier this year. 4 of us with snowboard gear. Not an issue. Rear set of seats came out, bags went in.

If one landed on my drive I’d have no complaints.

Since the dedicated MPVs have gone out of fashion, there’s a lot to be said for the van-with-windows type of vehicle. The VW Caddy and Citroën Berlingo are great at this as well.

They are. In my confusion about what to do vehicle wise I was drooling over a really nice VW caddy that had a really tasteful and simple rear seat / bed and camper conversion.

Decided it was too small for my needs in the end but I could have made it work at a push.

I could easily keep my t4 for the camping / leisure side and have a caddy, Berlingo, connect as the daily drive / work horse.

Slowest car- probably the jeep but it didn’t matter
Dream car - a van that can be used as a camper and large family car, tax and MOT free, insanely reliable, cheap to insure and simple to work on. Oh and rust resistant. Forgot to mention minimal carbon footprint.

I learnt to drive in a Mitsubushi Colt, kept getting my great long feet stuck under some shelf thing they put over the pedals which was very annoying and dangerous. My Mum took me out a few times in her Alfasud 1.5 which was quite nifty however the handbrake never worked which for hill starts in Devon when learning (with your Mum screaming beside you) isn’t much fun.
I have to mention the VW Caravanette which was fantastic for parellel parking though it had problems getting up hills (over heated and chugged).
Had a Toyota Corolla 1.3 Automatic which was rubbish, only way to overtake someone was going down hill which was hairy.
Driven a few VW Polo’s and Golfs TDI versions all the same horrible, impossible to douse the accelerator correctly and end up kangerooing along. Just nothing then everything all at once. Rubbish!
Mentionned my GSA lovely slow and comfortable, here’s my finger LOL and getting into fields for a picnic such a doddle with that wonder suspension.
Opel Kadett, rubbish!
Toyota Picnic great familly car soo reliable after driving someone elses car I’m so glad to get back in mine.
My daughter has a Clio 1.2 16s quite like it pottering around town compared to the Picnic but shit you can not go a month before something packs up. Grrrr! Last one wheel bearings for crying out load!
Helped my son buy a Ford C-Max for next to nothing Ford 1.8 TDCI in it not a sign of an oil leak and quite nice to drive. Motor and chassis built like a tank the interior falls to pieces though, Ford
Slowest car probably the Toyota Corolla however a lot of the cars I’ve driven haven’t been very fast.
Fastest car Toyota Corolla going down a very steep hill trying to get past an even slower thing before a stupid island in the middle of the road.
I think the 1st car I actually owned was the Toyota Picnic, so I’m a one car man so far unless you count the few months I had my daughters car in my name?

We had a C-Max for around 18 months which I rather liked. The engine was the 1.6 diesel which is based on a Peugeot design, I think. Not the fastest but reliable enough.

I forgot to mention the most forgettable car I’ve ever ‘had’ Fiat Uno 1.7 diesel. Ok the motor is indestructable however everything around it falls to pieces and wears out faster than you can replace them.
Diesels without turbo are also catastrophic if you go up Mont Ventoux, yes getting up is a chore, the worst is descending. You need the road to be completely clear as there’s no engine brake. Get stuck behind someone best option is stop if possible. Brakes over heat and it feels like your skating.
Oh! and never put even a little too much oil in or the motor will suddenly take off!

Went to look at smart car last night…it was only up the road…when we got there…The car looked OK…But he said - the exhaust rattles so I will replace that…the Oil lights on so I will do oil change…the battery was hanging out and he said - dont turn the car off as it wont start as battery needs replacing…I said arent you meant to do all this before I arrive?

Although they are automatic they are only semi so you have to nudge the gears up and down. Bit annoying. But although this one was a shit heap you could tell a better one would drive OK about town. Only £30 a year road tax and £200 insurance.

But ill be honest I have no enthusiasm to look for a 2nd car. Im just not interested really.
