Shame as given the context of this thread, I’d hoped you were getting warmer……

Not to ongoing cheap insults but not to worry. I had been hoping to learn a little about hydrogen and the issues surrounding electric cars, battery production and the like but it’s not to be it seems.

The two barriers to renewables+hydrogen in the transport sector are incumbent infrastructure and mediocre round trip efficiency. Hydrogen needs the functional equivalent of the same mass scale infrastructure that conventional fuel does, and that infrastructure took generations to reach where it is now. Most of it has been paid for long ago. That is a difficult competitive position.

Round trip efficiency means that in order to produce 1 MWh of usable energy output from hydrogen, you need to use electrolysis to produce hydrogen. That process is about 70% efficient. Storage losses are de minimis, but fuel cell conversion from hydrogen is somewhere in the 50-60% efficiency range, so the whole in-out cycle is 35-42% efficient. You need something approaching 3 MWh of electricity in the first place. If that is intermittent electricity that has nowhere else to go, at some level you don’t care. But otherwise it is a significant hit.

That said, we rather casually ignore how poor conversion processes are on conventional fuels like petrol and coal. The Rankin cycle yields about 30% usable energy and 70% waste heat.

fixed for truth. Although there’s no ecologically correct way to move long distances in my part of the world, when you get to a 2-3hr wait at charging stations to go east into the mountains it’s kind of funny to watch

I live in Canada, eh? closest major Canadian city (to me) is Calgary, pop 1.35mil. 930 KM away. closest minor City (Kamloops pop 91,000) is 320km.

I do! in the suburbs. so if you own a Tesla and live in Vancouver, you need to top up your charge in Hope, BC before you start to climb the Rocky Mountains into the BC interior. Coquihalla pass is 1108m elevation

Last summer there were 2-3hr waits at the supercharger stations in Hope for the hundreds of them trying to get away on the holiday weekends.

we have two cars both petrol. 1.5L Honda Fit (Jazz, in EU) and a Hyundai Santa Fe. may replace the Honda with a plug-in hybrid at some point.

It has been improved in the last few years, but not long ago there wasn’t a charging station between Thunder Bay and Sault Saint Marie, which created a dead zone a Tesla could not cross. There are 3-4 now, but that is still a distance of ~750km

not sure if you’ve ever had the pleasure of climbing the Coquihalla, but that prolonged grade kills a lot of vehicles in the summer heat. 30km of 6-9% grade winding up the mountains to the peak at 1108m, from basically sea level at Hope. in this video you can actually see the noticeable change in the terrain as you gain elevation. nice drive but hard on vehicles and will drain an EV quite quickly.
