We can now bring you more details about US President Donald Trump’s latest executive order, which calls for an end to diversity policies within the federal government and in the private sector.
In the order, the Trump administration describes initiatives under the Diversity Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and the Diversity, Equity Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) umbrella as policies that “violate the text and spirit of our longstanding federal civil rights laws”.
These policies, the document reads, undermine national unity as they “deny, discredit and undermine the traditional American values of hard work”.
The Trump-led White House used the order to instruct government agencies to “combat” DEI preferences, mandates, policies and activities in the private sector.
The document goes on to give the attorney general 120 days to build a report advising the government on how best to encourage an end to DEI and DEIA in private workplaces, including a list of the “most egregious and discriminatory DEI practitioners” and steps that can be taken to deter them.

The pardon power is absurd and at the end of every presidency we find ourselves asking questions about how we allow it and shake our heads at the ways in which it is used and then just move on. It is also a power that hasnt been well tested in courts so we have often found ourselves asking “is this legal” and not getting a clear answer. See the long running debate about Trump pardoning himself.
As for these pardons I haven’t actually seen the detail reporting, but I imagine they are time limited up to the end of Biden’s term rather than permission to run off and do future crimes. Concerns about precedent are sometimes valid, but not when it comes to Trump. He doesn’t need an excuse to do the awful thing he was always going to do (see Jan 6th pardons) and if you are concerned about precedent be concerned about what it does to our civic life to have a president make unfounded, baseless accusations about criminality of people he believes to be his political opponents. Trump creates situations where other people are only left with bad option 1 or bad option 2. We need to be focused enough to not take our anger out on the person backed into the least worst response but the person who has spent 10 years+ poisoning our civic life.
