Yeah, itā€™s a miracle drug, but even miracles have limits

I read the article and the quote from the Greenland politician, about a constructive dialog and a mutually beneficial partnership with the United States, made me think this might gain traction.

Itā€™s appalling that it all starts off with a lunatic bully wading in forcefully, likely having heard an adviser talk about Greenlandā€™s mineral wealth.

But I wouldnā€™t rule out an arrangement being found that enriches the 57,000 Greenland citizens, while also giving them the covering of American ā€˜protectionā€™ in the form of a military base, or bases. The underlying story will be America gaining access to the rare earth materials in the fight against China for global top dog status in the next century.

The complicating factor for me is how Denmark factors into all this, but if the Greenland people have a referendum - thereā€™s only 57,000 of them - itā€™s not difficult to see how America could buy them off.

They finally woken up then. Europe needs recall their ambassadors and not let Trump set foot in their countries or his plane cross their airspace.

I like Canadaā€™s threat, cutting off the gas supply to their southern neighbour states.

It is nonsense. Canada isnā€™t going to cut energy exports arbitrarily. For that sector, modelling suggests that Americans would pay about $1.03 (!) for every $1 of tariff on electricity, and $0.98-0.99 on oil and gas.

Well that might be the cover story but if you look at ICBM flight trajectoriesā€¦

The US already has a base in Greenland, and closed some they did have.

Itā€™s a little from column A and a little from column B.

Interestingly, if you have money (and there is the mantra that money makes money) buying a house and citizenship of Greenland right now might be quite profitable. Buying a stack of land could be very rewarding. Ah, how I dream.

Sort of gives the lie to the notion that a different arrangement is needed. Pituffik (used to be Thule) is in the NW, the US shuttered the southern ones because they were no longer seen as useful. The central ones were closed when NORAD moved from the DEW line further north. Pituffik is not actually part of that newer NWS line, but it completes the arc.

Muskā€™s money will sort it out. Wonder how many strippers and prostitutes he could afford for our orange overloard?

You canā€™t really buy land in Greenland, other than the small parcels on which houses are built and similar ones that are created around that purpose. Virtually the entire island is now held in common by the Greenland Inuit. Leases are possible, but it is not a straightforward process. Trumpā€™s desire to ā€˜buy Greenlandā€™ runs right into the ara of the Greenlanders centuriesā€™ long effort to get out from under European colonialism. It isnā€™t Denmarkā€™s to sell.

To be honest, I am not sure any of these threats and news about them belong in this thread. The American circus cannot be said to be an American circus when the debate is over annexing foreign lands. This is global now really.

Wonder if heā€™ll try ā€œHereā€™s some money and we can relocate you to some prime land in New Mexicoā€ Wouldnā€™t surprise me.

That worked out so well for the Cherokeeā€¦
