Dominik SZOBOSZLAI: 2024/25

Something Rafa tried for about 10 games with Momo Sissoko :joy: It made our football look like watching the dodgems at the fair

He isn’t playing at his best - he knows it, Arne knows it, we all know it - but he is an integral part of a team that has won eleven of its first twelve games, so he is obviously doing something right.

Keep working hard, Dom, and I am sure that the magic will return.

His beard looks impressive though.

Moustache line needs working though, falling on his upper lip. Will end up in his mouth. Horrible to see usually.

For me, he sometimes overdoes the attempt to put something extra on his passes/crosses/shots. Which is not always needed.

You don’t have to top spin or swerve every pass. You don’t have to put a crazy amount of swerve on every cross, which then end up more in ā€œchippedā€ crosses rather than finding the best balance between accuracy, power and swerve. You don’t have to knuckle hit every shot (sometimes bloody aim for where the goalkeeper isn’t placed).

For someone with reputation and obviously someone who finds great pleasure in ball contact (mostly shooting in his case so far in his career, funny because it seems like now he’s afraid of shooting, perhaps not wanting to be perceived as someone who ā€œonlyā€ runs a lot and shoots a lot?), I’d expect (or imagine) him to also pass the ball better when it comes to simple passes.

Play more with your technique, put more variation to it. Sometimes it’s more important to receive and pass well, simply, rather than do something extra when it’s not needed. Ends up being inaccurate or difficult for the receiving player.

Funnily enough, that’s the difference between a proper guitar player and a guitar wanker - and Szoboszlai is yet to master playing the right note at the right time. I like that he’s relentless in pressing and always - and I mean always - available for a pass. He never, ever hides.

It’s a shame that his output in front of goal doesn’t match his application. Hell, he doesn’t even get to play the right ā€œpass before the assistā€ these days. I read the other day that his passing percentage in the final third has dropped off significantly this season but I don’t think it’s because he’s playing these passes more often, it’s that they don’t come off.

He’ll come good, give him time.

I think like many great players of the past, there is always that step from very good to great/world class. Dom is already very good but like many of such players, there is that step. Not everyone can make that step but Dom is young and is at one of the best clubs to make that happen. Mentally he seems to be up there so as long he shows his commitment and passion, I think Liverpool fans will always embrace him as one of us and give him time and space to develop.

I got the impression that his card last night was the third of the same type he got this season (i.e. Liverpool lose the ball, he tracks back and brings the opponent down from behind).

I like his all-action style but I hate that he won’t be available against West Ham because I think he’s precisely the kind of player who’d pick holes in their midfield - and it’s not been a happy hunting ground for Liverpool over the last few years.

I wonder what Elliott can do in this kind of situation.

I still expect him to kick on - just as you think that he’ll finally make his big breakthrough, he gets an injury that sidelines him for three months. I think that playing in Slot’s system should suit him but he’s still ā€œrecoveringā€ from injury, the team has had all sorts of injuries and I think that’s the reason why he’s not been able to consistently be fielded in a central midfield role.

That said, he and Szoboszlai should push each other on to continue improving. The former relies on technical ability a bit more, while the latter relies on energy to find the chinks in opponent’s armour. I’m really not sure if both could play in the same eleven even if both of them are at the top of their game but I just hope they can be the best they can be.

With Dom out I fully expect we’ll see Jones in that role…

Exactly. Don’t understand why that’s even up for debate.
