Kinda feels appropriate to see if i can find a copy of an old computer game I used to enjoy. Elite.
That space trading game where you would visit different planets with different styles of government that resulted in different markets for different goods, and the different levels of resistance you would get along the way.
Secret Service generally believe the sun shines out of their arses, and look down on local law enforcement (anywhere, in any country) as âtraffic copsâ. As @Limiescouse notes, at least some of Trumpâs detail were complicit. However, at some point they may find that they need support from more than traffic cops at a Capitol Hill demonstration, and Capitol Police must be absolutely embittered. There is no longer any point in risking life and limb to defend Congress.
That may be true from a institutional perspective, but they are still âbrothersâ and I doubt they would be too happy seeing the murderer of a fellow officer getting a pardon.
Maybe, but norms and institutions like that are in rather poor repair in the US these days. The Secret Service is overwhelmingly white, Capitol Police are more reflective of DCâs demographics and are almost 50% black or Hispanic. Doubtless some are troubled
State Department is getting purged this morning, with immediate effect - down into the career foreign service levels, though so far only the tiers that are appointees rather than organizational promotions.
Note that difficulty getting people like this out was one of the big criticisms of Bidenâs withdrawal. It is just so frustrating to be yet again put in a situation where people were given attention to air criticisms they didnt believe, and the people responsible for giving them attention by pretending to take them seriously will learn nothing.
What do you mean learn nothing? They learnt they will get away with it, and all that they need to do is to kowtow to the right people and their careers will advance.
Itâs fucked up, but we have to put it in the context of the time. Trump made criminal prosecution of these people a theme of his reelection, despite never articulating an actual crime or presenting anything that amounts to credible evidence of their criminality. Having the government pursue you like this is potentially ruinous financially and so this is some attempt to immunize them against politically motivated government harassments. Yes this is what Trump says happened to him, so some people will say this is just the other side doing the same. But we as individuals have both the ability and imperative to discern reality from bullshit and that means evaluating the claims of criminality on their merits and taking the appropriate action.
