The pardon power is absurd and at the end of every presidency we find ourselves asking questions about how we allow it and shake our heads at the ways in which it is used and then just move on. It is also a power that hasnt been well tested in courts so we have often found ourselves asking āis this legalā and not getting a clear answer. See the long running debate about Trump pardoning himself.
As for these pardons I havenāt actually seen the detail reporting, but I imagine they are time limited up to the end of Bidenās term rather than permission to run off and do future crimes. Concerns about precedent are sometimes valid, but not when it comes to Trump. He doesnāt need an excuse to do the awful thing he was always going to do (see Jan 6th pardons) and if you are concerned about precedent be concerned about what it does to our civic life to have a president make unfounded, baseless accusations about criminality of people he believes to be his political opponents. Trump creates situations where other people are only left with bad option 1 or bad option 2. We need to be focused enough to not take our anger out on the person backed into the least worst response but the person who has spent 10 years+ poisoning our civic life.
