Drill Baby Drill...the US Politics Thread (Part 2)

India’s a member of the commonwealth as well. So not sure that still exists.

I’m curious too, but if I remember past incidents correctly, the answer is that the journalist would have been prosecuted. And that’s with relatively less amoral people in power.

You’re right… but in order to “downplay” it in the news, it has to be something “bigger”, because it really is “the headline” and “the topic” that’s going around the world right now.

Look at this…this…I don’t even know what to call these critters any more. They literally put the entire world into shit.

The Pentagon Papers case (NYT vs the United States) stated that the first amendment protects a paper/journalist who publish classified information as long as they came about the info without issue. It is that latter clause that has often since given the government room to pursue them, even if controversially. Typically though those legal pursuits are more focused on demanding the journo help them in their investigations of the source of the leak, and when the journo refuses to the government has often prosecuted the journo for obstruction. See Judith Miller getting about 3 months for refusing to reveal her source for the Valerie Plame unmasking

Lots of people are criticizing Goldberg for how early he jumped ship on this chat and being careful in what he published. But does anyone have doubt that in this dumbest of times there is a scenario where they go after him for it somehow being his fault, for tricking them, into being on the chain?

Republican blames Biden administration for neglected security infrastructurepublished at 09:49

Senior Republican Nicolee Ambrose is blaming Joe Biden’s administration for neglecting US national security infrastructure while in power.

“I know of several instances where perhaps cyber threats were repeatedly discussed and some Democrat officials chose not to take action," she tells the BBC World Service’s Newsday.

Ambrose says she has personally witnessed “systems that were compromised because Democrats did not take the necessary steps to secure these systems from cyber threats”.

I’m shocked I tell you. Shocked!

Shocked it took this lok to blame Biden and the democrats

If you ever had to deal with the crazier of these evangelist types, this tactic won’t be new to you. They’ll go on about how they saw a vision of this or that and if you contradict them it’s “blasphemy against the holy spirit”. And in their book, that’s the only, one unforgivable sin. Allowing these lunatics to get a hold of their party to begin with is the reason they find themselves in this cult.

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them…

There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God’s name on one’s behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both. I’m frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ and ‘D.’ Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of ‘conservatism.’"

Sometimes I wonder why they even bother with these dogshit excuses. Trump supporters don’t need them, they’ll support anything they do anyway.

Fox News has long played the role of being the arbiter of whatever attack/defense line the right are going to use to get them through a news cycle. Lots of different ideas get tried out in various spaces, and then that all gets fed through a pipeline to Fox News who then signal to everyone which line and/or argument everyone on the right should be using.

FWIW, many on the right have not got this memo yet as there is a still and awful lot of “Goldberg is a hack so who cares what he says” type deflections.

Bitch, we have those safeguards in place now. These people just felt that being required to follow the rules was beneath them

Which group of voters rejected the Covid VAX? Which administration has just cancelled the research on a new vaccine that quite literally cures cancer?

No, we cannot give you details on who these people are, so you can vet if our claims about why we targeted them are supportable, because that would be a national security threat to do so. Please just forget that we’ve previously broadcast video of their transfer to El Salvador back before we thought we would have to pretend it was a security threat to know who the people are.

Maybe giving them a blank cheque for the test of 2025 wasn’t a good idea after all?

This is not quite the image I was describing the other day about the reach of RW accounts that touch politics, but it describes the same phenomenon - people who are not consciously trying to inform themselves about current affairs and politics are still being absolutely bombarded from the right about politics, much of which is based on bad faith descriptions or their opponent or outright lies.

Why do people think the Dems are focused on culture war issues? Because people who are not paying much active attention to the news are being told by these people in the red boxes that this is what the Dems are doing.

I don’t know UK, Oz, or NZ information security regulations, but I suspect they are not very different from the Canadian ones. With the knowledge that the entire American intelligence establishment is not secure, a Canadian officer could actually face prosecution for normal sharing of information with an American counterpart. We sort of knew they were compromised, but not as fundamentally as using an off-the-shelf app for an open-ended (unvetted) group chat.
