PBS is the third most trusted news source in the US according to a recent survey. Behind The Weather Channel (which doesn’t really count) and the BBC.

I hope that the UK government realise what soft power the BBC still holds and actually invest in it.

Spoilers: they won’t.

Unfortunately, I think you are right.

For a govt mouthpiece to be trusted. Yep.

Far be it from me to like anything Trump.

Something that needed to be done for the Indian economy.

You can’t claim to be an open market and then go back into protectionism.

Is this true?

Partly.

The nukes belonged to USSR and Ukraine didn’t have the activation codes.

Yes , they probably could have gotten those codes later by other means. But I for one think that one less country with nukes is a better thing.

We’ve seen too many countries use the threat of nukes.

It’s really not a government mouthpiece despite recent attempts to make it one.
It’s ethos has always been to strive for impartiality, even if that is impossible. The fact that it’s criticised by both sides shows that it’s not (yet) the mouthpiece for either party.

Wrong thread though.

PBS is the nearest equivalent in the US, and in my experience it’s the best place for intelligent reporting in that land of hysterical media.

It is (meant to be) a public service broadcaster, not a propaganda outfit. That is a distinction that is very important and is why they are trusted. The soft power element comes from the fact that a nation can ensure that their side of the story is actually told. However, that all relies on what they publish being accurate, truthful, universal and comprehensive.

If you want to compare public service to propaganda, ask yourself whether what they are saying is true, and whether they are suppressing minority views.

Nah.

I’m always Ill trusting about something coming out from the likes of bbc or even Al Jazeera for that matter. Even if both of them produce good content.

These are both solidly republican districts going back to even when Dems were competitive statewide. They were Trump+30 districts. No one seriously believed the Dems would win but the polls showed incredible loss of support and so the interest in these races was more about watching how far that margin might fall so boffins could tell us what that means for the next round of elections.

To that point, both candidates drastically underperformed the historical margins. That doesn’t yet put Florida back in play statewide, but it is a show of significant dissatisfaction with the GOP from their base. People will now write stories about what that means, but almost all of those will just be the same story they were ready to write anyway. Does anyone need to see a reduction in the winning margin by 20 points to know right now the gop are unpopular?

For me one of the interesting things about these results is the context it puts the trump administration in. In previous years these results would be enough for an administration to realize their unpopularity and pivot. Of course no one expects that today from trump and I think that is probably the more interesting and important story

The weather Chanel is privately owned but gets by almost entirely on data from the public national weather service, which trump has gutted

Did you watch? I watched the last five hours to show my support. Cory had some very interesting historical stories of people he’d met, those greats that had inspired the constitution, he did a really nice job considering he went for 25 hours. Chat had a number of Canadians giving their support. Which considering the shitshow Trump has caused is pretty remarkable.150 million clicks on tik tok. Only 157,000 watching YouTube. But it was unedited and called out what this regime is doing. I left feeling more optimistic than I have since November.

The alternative is news from sources controlled by private companies or individuals like Murdoch etc, who most certainly have a vested interest in pushing certain narratives.
I know public service broadcasting isn’t perfect, but it’s private media that has produced Fox, Sky, the Sun etc, and is hugely responsible for the state we’re in.
