The four servicemen who died on an exercise in Lithuania last week are due to arrive back in the US today and Trump will not be in attendance. Instead he will be at his golf course to host a LIV event. In his first term he attended only the first 4 transfers that occurred on his watch and sat out the remaining 100. We have well sourced reporting that Trump explained away his disinterest in participating in those transfer ceremonies because of his disparaging views over the people who died while serving the US.
Yet the right put significant investment into attacking Biden for disrespecting our troops for allegedly looking at his watch at one of the ceremonies he attended, which his team explained as him actually turning to his dead sonās rosary beads.

If you ask an American they will tell you they love their military and respect our service men and women. But itās all for show. It serves less as a real commitment and more a way to do demonstrate performative patriotism by doing trivial things like letting our service men and women board a plane early.

Trump has a duality about a lot of things where he has diametrically opposed views about something that cannot be reconciled and the Military is no different. He does all the pandering you are supposed to do as an American and a politician. But the idea of service, or even sacrifice, is totally alien to him and is something that only suckers and loses do. I dont think this is revealing about Trump. But the lack of accountability for it he has had from his voters, people who tell themselves and anyone who will listen, that they love the military, should be revealing to people. Many in the press reacted to those McCain comments back in 15-16 like they expected it to end him. It did not. That should have been a paradigm changing moment for how they thought about Trumpās place in our politics, or even what patriotism meant to the average American, but vanishingly few people in the press learned much from that.
