Background on Bukele

The drop in violent crime his government champions was achieved in part by paying off the gangs themselves to stop. As part of that deal the gangs offered operational support to the party, which totally coincidentally saw them achieve a majority in the last election you generally dont see in authentically competitive elections - 85% in the presidential and 54 of the 60 congressional seats.

The head of the prison system that is now being paid to receive the people we are renditioning out of the US was sanctioned under the Magnitsky act as a result of this.

This is the government we are partnering with

So…quite the suitable counterpart for the current US government then (child abusers, racists, perverts, molesters, drunkards, drug users, convicted felon leading them).

I knew ( without even looking into it ) when I saw that dude sat preening next to Trump that his government simply had to be compromised. Birds of a feather …

How apt, coming after @Limiescouse screed against Friedman…

That was the piece that made Ezra invite him in for the discussion.

He is right to call out that so many perspectives on China are based on a refusal to recognize how much their economy has changed and modernized.

He is probably right to think that the US cannot reasonable hope to outcompete China in these sectors by turning the US into a walled garden and trying to make our own version of it.

I dont know that he is right about what cooperation with them to bring that innovation to the US would look like, but I assume he is wrong about something pretty fundamental and so it it is probably in that areas.

lol … I’d actually read the article just before coming here and then seeing Limie’s post.

(tbf , I actually think Friedman’s ok in the main. My only real complaint would be his omniprescence at the NYT. Someone should tell him less is more.)

… and put enormous tariffs on China!
Is it worth negotiating with these lunatics?

Albo had the perfect 4 word response when he tried to bully Aus - Not Up For Negotiation.

Hopefully UK shows some backbone and refuses to bend over, even if it results in losing trade with the US. Can always find other markets

Just sit in the queue to negotiate with China. Like everyone else.
