Garret Graff did a really good series (season 2) on right wing extremism that essentially makes this argument. It connects McVey to the earlier Ruby Ridge and Waco incidents arguing that he was not the lone wolf he was portrayed as but the product of an organized movement. And once you reframe him and his actions in that way it is relatively straight forward to draw a straight line to the energy of the MAGA movement, which he does very convincingly
