People who keep promising they will change rarely do.
Give it a couple of draws and they will be back involved. Also this will be the first job Alonso has with this set up.

Keep it civil.
Unless Alonso has some kind of god or saviour complex, I don’t think he would take the LFC job as it is now. The expectation from the supporters would be too great and burden too heavy, borderlines on unreasonable. I would not fault him for not taking this job even if it’s available.
I’m sad we didn’t sign Alonso up. Slot needs to go, Xabi was available, he did really well at Leverkusen (Real Madrid he gets a free pass as player power is out of control, but his win rate and ppg were very good). I don’t want to get stuck on what makes someone a legend or merely a very good former midfielder. Bottom line he is liked by fans, has a vision for the game, and we need a reset.
So yes, I am sad that he has gone to Chelsea.
Now two possibilities remain. We have our eye on another manager, and if that’s the case I can easily live with that and I look forward to seeing who it is and what he can do.
The other option, keeping Slot in post, seems like it is inviting all sorts of trouble, and I really can’t see the sense in it. The first sign of bad form or a bad result or two will see next season sinking beneath the waves. The owners have a chance to prevent that.
I won’t say good luck to Xabi as I can’t stand Chelsea, but I will be watching to see how he goes.
Thanks, appreciate that reply.
I also share your doubts about how tough Alonso can be in front of troublemaking players. Will be interesting to see.
Yup also agreed that Enrique is the golden ticket but why would he want to come to us? Because he has done all he can at PSG especially if they win back to back CLs and clinch theCwC this time?
It’s a load of bollox pal
Mac Allister is unlikeable, especially after that load of bollox with Konsa. LFC players dont do that.
Here is this article on Xabu, not sure whether to take with a pinch of salt or not.
DaveOCKOP often is so full of shite.
It’s such a stupid story. Xabi announced he’d be staying at Leverkusen before Hughes was even appointed at Liverpool. It’s possible he was sounded out by Edwards before hand but you’d have to have a terrible view of Edwards to think he’d be offended at a novice manager saying he wasn’t ready for that leap and then holding a very reasonable decision against him
Okay, thanks for letting me know.
Xabi is one of my all-time preferred players at LFC, and I’m in awe of what he managed to achieve at Leverkusen. I’d have loved to see him in charge of our squad. He seemed a perfect candidate. But for whatever reason, fsg and Edwards/Hughes didn’t want him. Go figure…
I’m a bit surprised that he didn’t look to postpone a bit his decision to go to Chelsea, given the immense pressure Slot is under. But most probably, the money was overwhelmingly good for him, and they must have made promises to him. Let’s see if they fulfil them… the potential is certainly there, but these owners are so daft that Xabi could very well be without a job as soon as next November.
Anyway, not our problem anymore. We move on, there are other very good young managers we can go for in order to replace Slot. Hoeneß is an interesting shout. Iraola intrigues me even more, he looks a class act, and a top manager in the making.
I certainly won’t want Xabi anymore if he proves to be a failure at Chelsea.
We move on. Hopefully, we get someone good.
In my opinion, that depends on how it goes there.
Certainly cant see him being Liverpool manager for a few years.
Xabi won the Bundesliga with Leverkusen which is a bigger achievement than Arteta winning the PL in his 7th years after spending 1£b.
He went to Real Madrid where he did not have a big say on transfers and the club also did not back him in ‘disputes’ with superstars like Vini and Mbappe.
Xabi saw what Klopp was able to build as a manager at Liverpool.
Xabi saw what one of his mentors Pep was able to build as a manager at City.
Xabi saw what his childhood friend Arteta was able to build as a manager at Arsenal.
Yes you need time and money but you also need power in your position.
I’m sure that being a head coach in the Premier League wasn’t an option for Xabi. It had to be the manager role.
But our current structure doesn’t allow that at the moment and that’s why he was never really an option. Not when Klopp left and even less now.
Going unbeaten in the league is downplayed as well. Its pretty unprecedented in most top European Leagues. Bayern Munich have never done it and a number of other major teams in Europe haven’t in their entire history.
snipped your post for brevity, but its a really good point ive never really thought on too much…
yes our structure seems clever, leaving the coach to just coach sounds like a great idea, and having specialists in other feilds also seems to be on paper at least, a very wise call…
but maybe it excludes you from going for the top of the top talent…
interesting.
This always feels like a canard to me given the way we’ve demonstrated how collaboratively we can work in the past even with a domineering presence like Jurgen. I wonder specifically what decisions or influence people think Slot wont have that actually matter?
Klopp was a different beast again.
im trying to think of a manager that compares with him, thats happy to put so much trust in others…
Luis Enrique? maybe?
Ancelotti, but were not in for him… im sure theres more out there even a tier down from that level, but the main ones in my mind want more accross everything.
