Very few opinions can be called wrong. This meets and exceeds that bar.

His brother Hakan was a lovely player.

Yeah. Alternative facts

Yeah, he lacked the mentality to become a genuine top player, but the talent was there for sure.

Those highly talented players who just have a few fatal flaws to their game are often the most beautiful and intriguing to me. I’d rather watch Hakan Yakin play football than Kylian Mbappe’s robotic efficiency anyday of the week!

Yeah MH, I was thinking the same. Why is the quintessential image of Englishness deemed to be a Crusader? They were from all over Europe, largely French, rampaging around the middle east at the behest of a mad pope. I could get Alfred the Great, Agincourt, Trafalgar/Waterloo or the Beatles, but Crusaders are not people I identify with at all.

Richard the Lionheart perhaps?

Didn’t even speak English, and spent the vast majority of his life abroad.

Oh don’t mention Prussian/German involvement in Waterloo

I think that is a simple function of the Cross of St. George being used to identify both England and French/English participants in the Third Crusade.

why the fuck is fifa doing this: France to face a complete team of Argentine officials

Take a look at the appointments for Thursday’s quarter-final between France and Morocco.

For the first time at this World Cup the whole on-field officiating team - referee, both assistants, fourth official and the reserve - are from the same country.

And that country is Argentina.

In Facundo Tello’s other two appointments, the fourth official and reserve were first from Saudi Arabia, and then Colombia.

The argument is that Argentina would want France to be knocked out. After all, they are the tournament favourites.

This is one of the biggest games of Tello’s career, his second World Cup quarter-final in successive tournaments. Such a high-profile referee is not going to act without the utmost integrity.

But perception is often just as important, and appointing Argentine officials against France in the quarter-finals is not a great look…bbc

With the QF refs now all announced, they are all out of the running for the semis and final. Anthony Taylor didnt get a QF assignment so is in the running for one of those games, but cannot be assigned to Argentina game because of the Falklands
