An underappreciated aspect of China’s green energy revolution was getting awarded the 08 Olympics and realizing they could not accept visitors coming and experiencing how rancid the Bejing air was.

In the US we just say “suck it up, Snowflake” and then slap some new tariffs on Canada.

#7 on Argentina had something to say to him during the game, after three of them chased him down the sideline and took the ball towards the end of the game when score was still 1-1.

They had their sights on him all game

Ah really? Makes sense.

It´s exactly what they do. They´re always chatting shite, grabbing you, shouting at you etc. trying to rile you up.

I play in a regional league, though at my age it is an odd mix of serious competition and beer league. All of the local Latin American clubs are exactly like that. I rather enjoy speaking to them in Spanish in the post-game handshake, when they realize that I understood all the really vile crap they were spouting.

But the Argentinians are genuinely elite at it, they wind up the rest of Latin America all the time.

I can´t understand them. It´s in their national character.

Even now I play in like a friendly group game occasionally and they´re so annoying and dirty when they play. As soon as the game is done they want to go for a beer and all be pals.

And true, they´re very much disliked. I think because they´re so disrespectful and arrogant. To be honest in many things they are quite similar to us English,

It almost always is just part of the game for them. Biting aside, I think Suarez and English football culture found each other mutually bewildering.

The supporter scene in Argentina is absolutely crazy. I once had the chance to go see a Boca-River derby at the Monumental, and was told in no uncertain terms by my host(a River fan) that it was a stupid idea. Just the streets in the area looked like medieval warfare.

yeah it is. And truly wild there for sure. Did you not go in the end?

Have to say, English football is also very idiosyncratic. It´s so aggressive and players are so angry all the time. latinos get angry so quickly but kinda calm down quickly. In England you just get perma angry middle aged blokes determined to kick everyone.

when I was younger, we played at a decently high level and had to drive into the city to play the likes of PCOV (Portuguese Club of Vancouver), ISCF (Italians), etc. The dark arts taught to those clubs when we were teens was multiple levels above the coaching we had.

during COVID, my Mrs bought an antique desk which I had to retrieve from North Burnaby. We started talking footy and when I went inside his home to get the desk I quickly saw he was old-school VMSL elite. I had played against his son 35 years ago (we are the same age), he remembered that we were the only club from the valley who had the grit (but not the talent) to put up with their shenanigans. Last time we played that team before we moved from youth to mens, they shelled us 10-1 with Davide Xausa scoring four.

No, my host was emphatic that it was just too dangerous. Somewhere around there was a match where River had to play a home game at Velez versus Boca because of fan trouble. The plan was to go see the next week’s fixture, milder fare, but as it turned out I had to leave Buenos Aires that week - never seen an Argentinian league fixture.

one of my ball teammates trained BJJ in Porto Alegre for a year. Got to see Gremio/Internacional (and he’s not a footy fan, but his hosts insisted he go with them). said it was the craziest thing he’s ever seen.

Ah gutting. If you stand out from them a lot it could be a bit risky

I also didn´t go to any as it turned out. Was there for months too.

Wildest I actually attended was Colo Colo v. Universidad de Chile - stadium roughly in half between red/blue flags/smoke and black/white flags/smoke, with deafening chanting.

that’s bucket list for sure, haven’t been to South America yet. I hear good things about Chile, albeit still pretty raw.

I tried to find a match in Costa Rica but didn’t have much luck. Just a kids match in Monteverde.

That might be the coolest one.

Epic.

If they were similar to us they’d get on like a house on fire but it very much the opposite no love lost between the two countries even before the Falklands.
