Former players and managers - general discussion (Part 1)

True. I think the signing of Wirtz pushes Szoboszlai back to be an 8. That potentially puts the squeeze on the minutes Jones might see. His flexibility will help him though.

I think Wirtz will alternate between being in front 3 or midfield. We have too much talent in the midfield to keep him there permanently.

Szoboszlai first has to prove himself deeper in those double-pivot spots. It’s not only about minutes, but more about different skills. Plus, he’s our best presser off the ball, especially now without Jota. So we might still need him a lot higher up the pitch. Wirtz’s role probably won’t change much whether he plays as a #10 or in the inside left channel (remains to be seen what does that mean for the position and use of our full backs on the day). Albeit we did change our shape slightly in some games in the second part of last season, it also resembled like a 4-3-3 at times.

Hang on, are Dom and Flo former players now?
Am I in a time warp?

There’s an interview with Fabinho in today’s Guardian:

What a side! Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge, Whelan, Houghton, Molby, Staunton, Rush, Hansen, Kenny.

Fuck even the Irish players were excellent then!

And this all came about from someone celebrating our heroes of the past.

Sterling contribution.

All I was trying to do was listing some of that great team (I thought it was 1988 but also applies to 1989) and how the Eire team was so strong.

:joy:

Bunch of children.

Noticed there were 12 unread posts in this thread… opened it up to find just two… guessing there has been another bunfight and some posts have been removed :0)

The most remarkable thing of a video of such a remarkable goal is the audacity of us attempting a title challenge with a strike partnership of Kuyt and Voronin

Was the right decision. Fabinho’s decline by that time was very noticable.

Yep. Which is why I wonder whether the likes of Mo and Virg will also be (relatively) unceremoniously moved on very quickly when the time is right.

I think the extended contract for Mo is partly to ensure a suitable transfer fee come end of this season if he doesn’t perform.

The difference was it was noticeable over half a season if not more with both him and Hendo.

Salah and VVD had a crap game and both are coming off excellent seasons. But I forgot that’s how we judge the players now.
