Half time and my footage immediately goes to what is a cross between studio analysis and a paid ad of a guy giving his parlay of the day - Chelsea to win, to score at least two goals, and with at least one being scored in the second half.

I am of the opinion that betting is ok as long as you bet what you can’t lose.

What I think is the increasing issue is that it’s being promoted via gaming and other outlets, younger people won’t see that as betting but it is and can lead to more dire consequences later in life. I personally would ban it from sports advertising though at least that’s been somewhat rolled back from the era of Ray Winstone shouting some odds at you for the number of corners.

I find it ironic that outlets such as Talkshite like to bang on about how much they back all of the various mental health programmes, yet are still heavily sponsored by the various betting agencies and have presenters like Brazil and McCoist who are always on about their betting on the horses or other such things

Because at the end of the day they will go “Think responsibly” and that then covers it all, it at least has got to half of the screen now.*

Gambling and the betting indust is never going to go away and will just get bigger. It can only be managed by individual responsibility, family and community and social levers put in by the government.

There are currently 8 clubs with betting company sponsorship.
The Premier League’s announcement specified clubs had agreed to “withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts”, which suggests the brands could still feature on shirt sleeves.

I’ve noticed Chelsea haven’t had a sponsor all season?

Wonder if these things are harder to get or less lucrative. You’d think not but it seems odd especially when you have Universities on Championship side shirts which is still deemed I think something like the 5th most watched league in Europe or something. Like Swansea was on Swansea for awhile it helped the overseas market especially when in the PL but it can’t have been a massive outlay for them.

U.S. households spend an average $1,100 a year on sports betting. For every dollar spent on bets, Americans put $2 fewer into investment accounts.
States that legalized online sports betting saw a 28% increase in bankruptcy filings within 4 years

Abstract
(from the original paper. Note: Not sure if the research has been peer reviewed. Definitely not sponsored by gambling and alcohol industries .)

Previous research documents a strong association between gambling and substance use, suggesting that these seemingly distinct behaviors may share similar environmental, neurobiological, and genetic causes. However, there is a dearth of credible empirical evidence on whether gambling has a causal impact on substance use or vice versa. This paper estimates the impact of gambling on substance use making use of the rapid roll-out of sports betting laws across US states. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and a difference-in-difference (DID) estimation strategy to assess the impact of legalizing sports betting on smoking and drinking behavior among adults, we find that the legalization of online sports betting has increased binge drinking frequency-at the intensive margin among young men by approximately 10 percent, but find no discernible impact on smoking. The results are consistent across traditional two-way fixed effects models as well as more recently developed DID methods designed for staggered treatment adoption.
