Yes it less noticeable with headphones, if that is what you mainly use.
It knocks off some of the higher frequencies of treble and mids, where a lot of the ‘ring’ and harmonic beauty of a guitar tone is.

Sold my Hiwatt amp and cab, so up £400. @anon27364116 Immediately I was on ebay, Im addicted arent I?
Not bought anything but in the market for a Fender 22w Deluxe reverb…mm mmm
Juicy.
I’m still guitar hunting furiously and getting more and more confused. Still it’s enjoyable. Ideally I’d like to spend a day in a really big guitar shop to be honest but that’s not happening any time soon for all sorts of reasons.
Thanks!
It brings a nervousness, and an unsettled feeling, but maybe thats part of the excitement. Ive never done that, as in spend a time in a large guitar store before purchase, but would relish it. Think it inevitably costs more temptation. Not sure I like sales demos either, and the soft-sell that goes with it. I am done buying guitars over the internet though, you must try them I feel.
I can see how you may be confused, but from here, you want either a 335 style or Tele. Too many nice guitars about and accessories now, its been said we are in the ‘golden era’ of guitar gear.
yeah loads of options. For some reason I cant settle on a Tele. Lots of options and none really jump at me and say I need to have it. Cant think why exactly. Probably different if I could get my hands on a few though.
I’ve been looking at what Gretsch have to offer over the last day or so. There’s a couple of great options there too. And there’s on e or two second hand floating round. Not the massive bodied, all bling one’s either.
Too much choice.
Gawd, I nearly mentioned Gretsch when we first started in your plight; they make absolutely stonking pick-ups, they really do, groove-trons or filter-trons and there are some TV Jones aftermarket versions; all are really tight low output humbuckers. Enough to say Neil Young’s go to guitar has a Gretsch pick up in the neck. Electromatics in green are lovely!
I got hold of a second hand Electromatic (Korean made) last year for £375. It’s a lot of guitar for that sort of money, and looks great. I love how easy it is to adjust the set up on it and the amount of variation you can get on tone, maybe too much as I can never remember how I had it in the past! Nothing like a Tele though!
No one here into acoustics?
I picked up a couple of acoustics since the lockdown started. One, a used 2006 Taylor 210 from back when the 200 series was still all solid wood and built in California. Was lucky to come upon a great deal. I also bought a new Martin dreadnought junior for the couch. Really fun guitar.
I do also have an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and a Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster, but although listening to electric guitar is by far my preference over listening to acoustic guitar, when it comes to playing, I prefer acoustic for whatever reason.
One thing is that I’m intimidated by all the effects involved with electric guitar. It’s a lot to learn. From different pickup settings, to amp settimgs, to pedals and effects etc, there are just so many variables to change your sound, which is a definite plus in many cases, but I’m just more comfortable with the aspect of the wood+steel alone being the voice of the instrument with acoustics.
Hi Brian, yeah Im into them but I cannot compete with what you have. I’ve a solid top Aria SV, from the 00s, I hear its a copy of a Guild D30 and it definitely has some treble on it. Been after a Martin for years but cant afford them and have spent more on electrics. I nearly bought a Takamine lawsuit Martin copy a few years back but the guy was in LA and when we started to talk about the deal, its clear he was freaking me about.
Its playing v effects; I may know effects and amps very well, but the acoustic guitar, folk finger style, is the highest expression of the guitar. Not that good of a finger picker at the moment, but I cant half ride distortion!
I’ve got a couple of acoustics but you may note from the start of this thread, or in the music thread I picked up a little 1958 Framus 5/50 a month or two back. Great for acoustic blues and an ideal machine to have by the couch.
I’m working hard on the technical side at the moment and for that reason the electric is getting more attention. That’s purely because all the stuff I’m learning off use electrics.
With regard to effects I’m going the other way now. A cleanish sound and an overdriven one, with a bit of reverb in it. And that’s about it. I really want to be able to use the guitar to vary my tone rather than running it through a huge effects chain where you’re never quite settled on what you have.
I see effects as an extension of possibilities of expression personally. Don’t think e.g. Hendrix was less expressive because he used the technology of his time.
Also good enough for Malcolm Young and Chet Atkins I believe. There is certainly something about and overdriven Gretsch guitar. There’s some real bite to it but it’s still rich. Some of them look really garish though (to me).
Sounds encouraging and a decent deal by the sound of things. One thing I find with Gretsch is that the pick ups are what they are. No variation (as such) between the various models bu there’s a massive amount of options in body shape, hardware and finish.
It’s acoustic first for me for sure. And always a Martin, the best mass produced guitars around in my opinion. I’ve had an OM-15 for a very long time, which is the guitar I could never get rid of, it’s a part of me. I wanted to try a dreadnaught though so picked up a second hand D-15 a few years ago and recently in lock down I allowed the credit card to buy me a D-35. It really is a superb guitar, double the money of a D-15 to maybe get 15% more but that’s just how guitars work.
Didnt know that! But yes its because of the lower output, when overdriven they are tighter; goes back to a discussion some posts ago about gain, volume and EQ. I decided I didnt want too much output in my guitar because I could always put it in after with a pedal, but if its in the pick-ups you’re stuck with it. So Gretsch are right in my sphere of interest. The White Falcon must be one of the most garish and decadent guitars ever made. Jack White uses a Gretsch too!
Dont know enough about them first hand, but have tried one in a shop a time or two. The build quality oozes from Martin, but the stand out thing I noticed was in the bass tones; there is a lot more going on. I will have one some day, but probably a concert size, Im moving away from dreadnaughts for the sheer boom of them!
I’ve heard only good things about these Electromatics so far. Not necessarily my style, but I can totally see the appeal.
I have a friend who has a Martin. Cost him thousands I think (I daren’t ask). Story goes, he was told by his accountant wife that he needed to spend a load of money really quick to get his tax bill down. He does stock photography and his costs are really only house expenses. To balance that he either has to spend on more photography gear or props. Guess what the Martin was.
He’s one hell of musician but this Martin sits in a glass cupboard untouched. That seems sad.
As a side note I also watch a luthier channel on Youtube and there seems to be a hell of a lot of Martin guitars that come his way for repair. Some are really old though
Yea you really can go crazy on these things, especially once you start getting the pearl in-lays etc. I can’t say I blame him if he had his wife/accountant on board though!
It’s a funny discussion point that we enjoy reminding him of. The story got even funnier when we found out that it needed another £100 or so spent on it to get it set up properly. Let’s just say he hasn’t lived it down and his wife constantly reminds him of his little collection.
But we’re all jealous to be honest. He earns a really good wage from his photography. He’s that good at the stock stuff it’s essentially a part time job, working from home with whatever holidays or time off he wants.
Hat off to him. Sadly I’ve never seen the guitar though. Not many have, at one point we thought it was just a rumor.
Anyone tried any of the the Yamaha Revstars?
He asks as he’s looking at a sweet Epiphone.
