I’ll have a bitter please...It’s the Everton thread

I met up with Klopptimist and RedJedi pre-match against Huddersfield for some festivities at hotelTIA (Jamie Webster doing his thing) then had ticket for second row of the Kop. 5-0, some pints afterwards and did the tour the following day with Mrs and Jr.

Maybe we should have a special thread where people can post whenever they’re in Liverpool. Or on some away trips, the same. Even if it’s more difficult.

Long-suffering Everton supporter friend of mine gave me some interesting insight into their run-in over a post-match beer last night. He thinks Everton is in real trouble, because so many of their games are against sides with something still to play for.

Palace - probably safe now, but a win at home next weekend locks it
Toon - a CL spot is in sight, you get those by taking 3 points in away fixtures against 17th place teams
Leicester - weak team, but right now just 2 points behind Everton, and it is a home game.
Brighton - another away fixture, this time against a team fighting to hold on to an EL spot
City - title race road kill at Goodison. He reckons this is where utter despair will take hold

His take is they need to get to the last two fixtures, Wolves(A) and Bournemouth (H) without having spiraled badly. If so, points in those last two will be enough to get them past Leicester, and Forest will likely be 2 points behind them. But that final home match against Bournemouth is going to see a very, very tense Goodison.

I thought this would make me feel better, knowing that these cunts cost us two titles. It didn’t.

But I still hope they go down, and they may take Leicester with them, two of our bogey sides.

Forest and Leeds also have a nasty run in. Leicester should really stay up with the fixtures they have. As hard as it is to believe, there are still three worse teams than them in the league and I think they’ll probably finish 17th.

If their last two fixtures were in the next 2-3, I think they would be fine. Forest’s run-in is just too nasty, too much ground to make up, so I think it will come down to one of Leeds, Everton, and Leicester. Leeds really needs 3 points versus Leicester.

I got that.

Sums up Everton.

Another link. They lost 1-0 to sixth tier Chester with 8 first team players starting in a behind closed doors friendly.

DCL is making a return for about 2 years now.

“What would Everton do?” - a brief summary by The Upshot.

Wow…that is stunning, even assuming the PL players were not taking it that seriously. The gap in talent should see Everton dominating without breaking a sweat.

Does a fwiendy game count?
So Fwatty Fwrankie has now lost 5 on the bounce. Bounce? More like cliffdiving all the way

I played on a side that used to get friendlies against Kansas City Wizards reserves. One year I walk out to see Tony Meola doing drills in the other goal. It was a pretty unexpected thing so I stood and watched for a minute or two. As I was about to get on with warming up, Lalas comes out and starts taking shots at him, so I gave it another minute or two. I then get tapped on the shoulder by one of our lads who is Scottish who wanted to introduce me to a guy he knew, Mo Johnson. He then told us their new manager was unhappy with their fitness so wanted his first team to get the first half…and that Preki was back from injury so I’d have to be taking care of him.

We were definitely closer in standard to an MLS side than Chester are to a Prem side, but even that was a chastening experience.

I was the best player on my team and so was tasked with man marking Tom Ince in a cup game once. He scored a first half hattrick and ended with 5.

The level of professional players is unbelievable.

Every time Preki beat me he’d come back to explain to me what I’d given him that allowed him to do that and what I should have done differently. The next time Id do exactly that and he’d beat me a different way. In the end we both agreed that the main thing I was doing wrong was simply not being at his level, as he ruffled my hair like I was a 4 year old (who had about 6 inches and 50 lbs on him) :joy:

Off-topic, but I once guarded Michael Jordan in a pick-up game. Carolina and Duke players and pro ex-players used to have a summer weekly game right after the grad school pick up games, and the two would flow together. Suffice to say that I am being very generous to myself using the term ‘guarded’.

After about 5 minutes, I decided it was time to cede the court to the talent.

I had the roll of being cannon fodder for the Welsh 7’s side before they flew out to Dubai. Their pace was the main thing that struck me. If you could get near them it wasn’t too bad.

I did not get near them much.

Also had the privilege of playing against some Tonga’n tank that was being lined up for Bridgend. Another eye opener.

Quite an experience seeing 225lbs coming at you at speed.

So they took a point against Palace, not a bad result for a relegation struggler away. But Leicester beating Wolves puts them in the bottom 3 ahead of schedule. That match against Leicester is really going to be decisive.
