I’ll have a bitter please...It’s the Everton thread

:joy:

Neville Southall on the standard of goalkeepers today: “The lad at Manchester City is all right, the lad at Liverpool is okay. Ours [Everton] is average… he does okay. He’s average. If I’d have played like that, I’d be out the team for Howard [Kendall].”

Fucking hell, that’s Big Nev and Big Dunc risking the wrath of the bitter cunts in the space of 2 weeks!

Classic case of … everything was much better in my day. It comes with age. I should know…

Impossible to compare goalkeepers from different eras. The whole set of skills required of goalkeepers has changed more than any other position. Southall just looks foolish..

Alisson is ok? I would have more respect for his opinion if he called it as it is. Best in the world beyond doubt.

Alisson is one of the best goalkeepers ever in my view.

Suppose all Goalies were amazing pre 1990

Southall post 1990 wasn’t ok.

I like Neville Southall. Used to follow him on Twitter.

His politics is better than his analysis of goalies mind.

Well Prickford exempted he is garbage.

I remember Southall, and he was an absolutely ridiculous keeper. Probably the best one of the eighties.

But it was a time when keepers were expected to stand on their line and save stuff. They did have an expectation to build play, pass accurately or play as a sweeper.

It’s worth remembering that the change in the back-pass rule radically changed what was expected of a keeper. At the time, he was probably as accomplished as you could hope for. Also a really brilliant guy as well.

And I’ve seen some of his fine saves but towards the end I doubt he’d be able to have made it off his line.

Imagine Prickford with the back pass rule not in place :see_no_evil_monkey:

He shouldn’t send his players out to injure ours then.

Would’ve loved him to takeover back in 2015.

It was also a great choice to pick from: Ancelotti and Klopp. Much better from the lazy days of Curbishley, O’Neill, Hodgson, etc.

Some of my friends pointed out that Klopp could be a better fit for the task at hand and looking back, I agree. Still, if it turned out to be Ancelotti, would’ve loved that also.

Great career from Ancelotti, full respect. We met many times.

20 games against his sides: 6 wins, 3 draws, 11 defeats.

I think Ancelotti would have been a disaster. We needed someone to oversee a rebuild, and carry the club. Ancelotti has always been more of a finisher.

Yeah doubt he leaves anything on his plate. The fat bastard.

Really? Were you tempted to ask him about his eyebrows?

Fat like Chiesa, or not that fat?

He raises both if you touch his G-spot.

:wink::joy:

I remember a report saying that he had asked FSG for a budget of over £200m for rebuilding the squad straight off. He probably wasnt wrong but Klopp got us going for far less and allowing that level of investment to be spread over a few years and aided through some cunning player sales.
