I’ve always said I’d play him out wide and give him freedom to go wherever he wants. His pressing stats in Germany and Europe with Leverkusen were off the charts I just think last season was a really poorly coached season for a number of reasons and I’m treating this as a fresh start for everyone. It’ll take a bit of time for Iraola’s style to take hold but I think Wirtz will be a defensive strength eventually (not necessarily in tracking back etc but in proactive ball winning duties he should be superb).
If we are relying on Wirtz to stop counter attacks that means we’re already fucking up in some other way to be honest.

He isn’t a defensive liability, he works hard and is high in the pressure numbers, it is Szob and Grav that need to work on who goes and who stays, the same with the fullbacks and finallymthe CB’s need to push up more.
Simple really from a coaching point if view.
Reality may be different.

Oh I’m definitely enjoying it. Very happy about this signing, I think he could be the catalyst to get both Isak and Wirtz going, in different ways. For me he’s a player type who should have the complementary qualities for both of them. So this is great news.
If this ends well, Hughes giving Iraola a squad he’s happy with, it’s all good as far as I’m concerned. I have a short memory.

Not over the line just yet with new signings, but it is looking good. For a few weeks I was sure we are going to get Jack Shit.

I can’t fathom how feasible it would be for him to oversee the transfer windows of two clubs, let alone him doing so and FSG being ok with it. It may be fun for some to think of Hughes as someone who works only on Fridays and does nothing else all week, but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes that we are never made aware of.
That said, I doubt that there’s a single Liverpool fan who is sorry to see him leave; There are question marks for almost every single signing that he’s made, including those that ought to have been considered as a surefire success.

For a former DM, whose strengths were his tenacity, and shielding a defense, you would think that Hughes would put a higher priority on a good, hard nosed 6.
Yeah worth remembering he started work for us months before his contract officially started. He did so with the blessing of Bournemouth having worked out a plan with them on how to manage the dual responsibilities and transition his Bournemouth ones to his #2 who was replacing him.
There is a lot about this whole situation over his tenure that is odd, but he’s not going to have done what is reported without full approval from his Liverpool bosses and without plans in place to manage the conflicts of time and interests.

It’s worth comparing Hughes with Jörg Schmadtke given that at the time he was regarded as a seat warmer. Hughes seems to have spent an awful lot of money on random players with no obvious strategy.
If Iraola can get the team performing, I have the feeling that we will still be left with some glaring gaps and expensive spare parts.
