I’m with @PeachesEnRegalia on this. I wouldn’t complete any such surveys without proper context and evidence of some sort of ethical approval. If it’s really for a University assignment that should be easy to elicit.

I think the idea of having to post a number of times before opening threads is a great idea. It means the Mods don’t have to deal with stuff like this.

I’ve just come back to this thread an have read through the replies. Thank you to those who have completed the survey, it is much appreciated.

I appreciate that it is unlikely that any further response will be received on this threat, but I just wanted to reiterate to anyone who was concerned that this is a genuine survey and I would like to apologise if this wasn’t the best place to post this.

No emails or personal information are collected as part of a response. Ethical approval has been sourced for the proposal, I haven’t shared this within my posts as it contains personal information and email addresses, however I will consider this going forward, thank you.

Ethics approvals are almost always available to participants so why wouldn’t you have shared this right at the beginning. The commercial tie in plus your lack of posting history means you have no credibility and are viewed as a spammer and treated according

Aren’t we being abit harsh here?

Maybe…

But anyone undertaking a study should be prepared to answer queries regarding the study. And should publish ethical approval and how the information might be disseminated.

More importantly in my view though…

They should establish who the Moderators or Admin are and seek their approval before posting and looking for participation. Surely that level of courtesy is due to the mods and members on here?

If you or I, or any long term member wanted to complete such a study then I see no problem. But landing in just like that is a bit cheeky.

I’m not saying this guy is doing this - but this is a very common social engineering tactic that online scammers use. They’ll arrive in a community and their first post is something like this, college student, research/data scientist, etc wanting people to take an anonymous survey. They try to seem credible and claim that because the survey is anonymous and doesn’t capture any personal data, that proves they’re not scamming.

The survey records your IP address and they’ll use any other data associated with your user profile on the community site to try to find more info about you. They might even follow up with additional surveys that maybe have some kind of giveaway associated with them, and when you click on the giveaway link they embed some kind of spyware/malware onto your phone/tablet/computer.

A good rule of thumb on the internet is to not trust anyone and don’t click links from people you don’t know. Including @SBYM.

In agreeance. Except the @SBYM bit. I’ve clicked on his links and am pleased to say I haven’t (yet) had the AFP or any five-eyes group at my door. For some reason my savings account is empty but given his loveable Christmas Elf attire it just couldn’t be him, could it?
