Has he improved enough this season to have a better chance of making it with us?

41 goals so far this season for Trent’s ball boy.

Oakley Cannonier’s injury-time finish secured a dramatic 3-2 victory for Liverpool U18s away at Sunderland on Saturday afternoon.

The young Reds were behind twice in the U18s Premier League North contest but responded brilliantly to secure all three points.

Luke Chambers drew the visitors level from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Ben Middlemas had opened the scoring early on.

Oliver Bainbridge restored Sunderland’s lead in the opening phases of the second half, before James McConnell scored to make it 2-2.

And then in the 91st minute, Cannonier completed the turnaround by netting his 28th league goal of the campaign.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com post-match, U18s boss Marc Bridge-Wilkinson said: "It was a difficult day, to be honest.

"We didn’t perform particularly well, the conditions were tough with the wind being really strong. But the boys, to be fair to them, stuck at it and managed to get the win.

"It’s obviously really pleasing that the lads have shown that mentality to stick at it, especially on a day when we weren’t performing to the level we know we can.

“The lads kept going and showed real grit and determination to stay in the game and do what was needed to get the win.”

Liverpool U18s: Mrozek, Scanlon, Jonas (Pilling, 40), Osbourne (Koumas, 89), Chambers, Stephenson, Frauendorf, McConnell, Clark, Musialowski, Cannonier.

Unused substitute: Hewitson.

Still very little else to his game other than goals. These players tend to dry up as soon as they step up to U23 level.

Of course I want him to make it but you look at the recent list of players who have had >1 goal per game in the U18s league includes players like Martell Taylor-Crossdale, Ellis Sims, Bobby Duncan - all players who are very limited outside of their goalscoring and none of them are going to be top level strikers.

Having a pre game hot chocolate yesterday in the concessions behind The Kop, I noticed an interaction to my left. A Mum and small boy recognised a lad they knew the lads hugged and the Mum got a photo of them both. Minutes later a Dad and his lad came and had a photo with him, so I took a closer look. It was Tyler Morton in civvies with a couple of mates chilling before the game.

That must be Stewart’s first goal back since returning from injury. Nice.

That looked a strong side our U-23s put out, not surprised by the result. How is Leicester’s 23s?

The win took us level on points with them.

They’re a bit of a weird U23 squad in that they are low on quality but keep players around a lot longer than other teams (well into their 20s) so they often win just based on experience/physicality.

Layton Stewart was on the mark as Liverpool U23s continued their excellent form in Premier League 2 with a resounding 4-0 win away at Leicester City on Monday night.

The Scouse forward, who made a comeback from injury as a substitute in the previous outing against West Ham United, made his first start in 13 months.

Harvey Elliott featured in the game and played the opening 45 minutes, as Barry Lewtas’ side extended their unbeaten run to nine games, with just one defeat in 2022.

Tyler Morton provided the assists for the opening two goals.

He set up James Norris for the opener in first-half stoppage time and then combined with Jack Bearne, who made it 2-0 to maintain his fine form in front of goal.

Norris then turned provider as he set up Stewart to make it 3-0, before the No.9 left the field in a planned change after enjoying an hour-long run-out.

James Balagizi, who replaced Stewart, added a fourth goal in the 84th minute after Bearne had struck the bar to complete a great night for the young Reds.

Reflecting on the win, Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: “The boys are in a really good place and it was a great night for us. I’m really pleased with them.

“The lads were brilliant and the quality of our play was good, and we have shown in recent weeks we are able to play at a really good level for 90 minutes.

“It was really good to get the win, score four goals and get another clean sheet as well.”

The highlight of the night was undoubtedly a goal for Stewart, and Lewtas was quick to pay tribute to the work that has gone on behind the scenes with the medical staff during the striker’s rehabilitation.

Lewtas added: “It was so nice to see Layton score as he has been out for a while.

“It was a great goal, a great finish and a different type of Layton goal, to be fair, with a shot from distance.

“The celebrations with the lads told its own story and it was lovely to see. It’s been a long road for him but he has done really well.

“Layton has worked so hard, and full credit to Paul Kelly and Scott McAuley, who have done a brilliant job with him to get him back.

“We had a strong midfield out with Tyler, Leighton Clarkson and Harvey – we are a top club and that is the level of players we have at this club.

“The likes of Harvey and Rhys Williams want to play and get their minutes, they want to stay sharp and if they are called upon by our manager, they want to be ready.

“It just shows the character that we have at this club. The lads want to play and they understand what they need to do to get to the next level.

“Harvey’s attitude and his performance, he is a credit to himself and a credit to the club as well.

“It was brilliant to see Jack score again and we are starting to see what a good footballer he is. He is in a good place.

“We play Manchester United next in our final Premier League 2 game of the season on Sunday at the Academy and we are looking forward to that.”

Liverpool U23s: Davies, Bradley, Beck (Quansah, 82), Williams, Koumetio, Clarkson, Bearne, Morton, Stewart (Balagizi, 61), Elliott (Corness, 46), Norris.

Unused substitutes: Kelly, Clayton.
