Nathaniel PHILLIPS: 2021/22 (on loan at Bournemouth)

This made me feel so old…Wonderwall?

There is the matter of the player’s wishes to consider. This could be his only chance to be a starter at a PL club. He’ll always be 4/5th choice for us.

Not often I disagree with your player assessments but that is utter drivel. Gomez is better than Phillips (although nobody is better if they are unavailable) but at 10%?

Don’t be silly.

I wouldn’t like to see Gomez take on WBA all by himself, thankfully that won’t happen this season!

and risk another season getting derailed because Gomez and Matip get injured again ?

Yes it’s hyperbole.

How is Phillips staying going to stop that anymore than Williams staying? Plus we have actually signed a centre back this window so we do already have additional cover compared to last season.

Second only to Salah :muscle: :star_struck:

I’m not going to go through the entire thread and count them all, but it’s probably 453 praising him and 453 slagging him off.

I don’t count Mo’s thread as 90% is @AnfieldRdDreamer getting wet! :astonished:

A center back in konate who isn’t spotless with his injury record so far.

We’ve had an unprecedent injury crisis the last season but here’s no guarantee that there won’t be two of our cb out together this coming season as well.

For me , nat phillips still needs to be in the bench atleast

At a guess he will be invaluable against Brentford whoever they are?

Brentford are a great little club, I’m delighted they’ve finally reached the PL after so long trying. They were the closest biggish club to where I grew up, although they were a lower division team then, and covered their games a few times when I was working for the local paper.

In terms of their style now they’re actually a lot more progressive than the usual Championship cloggers. I doubt the quality is there to keep them up, but they’ll certainly give it a proper go… more like a Norwich than a West Brom.

All of which is to say, imo the assumption Phillips would do against them, presumably because of his aerial strength, isn’t quite on the money.

i was thinking more along just physical presence an d level than just 1 aspect. you have made me rethink that.

We should be well set up to deal with two centre backs being out at the same time this season though. Van Dijk, Gomez, Matip and Konate should all be able to start regularly when fit. We currently have Davies, Phillips and Williams as the emergency cover and then van den Berg, Quansah, Koumetio should shit really go sideways (which we would expect it not to given that we actually get a proper pre-season this year and none of our CBs will be playing much football over the summer, so they should be all nicely rested and raring to go.

I think we can afford to let Phillips gonif that means banking £10m that could go towards a midfielder or forward that I think we need much more urgently than a back up CB.

I would think we’d be able to let some of the guys in the periphery leave and get the required money. Origi + Shaq + Grujic + Wilson should be a comfortable 30M if not more.

Right I agree, and Phillips will be a peripheral figure if he stays also.

Fine with him being here but £10m is a lot of money that could be reinvested wisely. Like you say add with Wilson, Shaq, Origi and Grujic then that’s basically freeing up the cash for a premier signing by letting go of guys who will likely get less than 1500 minutes between them.

I’d be looking at a minimum of 20m purely for the fact that he’s 24-25 and he’s English. 10m isn’t worth selling him for. Has to do his wishes too and if the club is sure that they can see off this season with the CB’s they have. Loan him out to a PL clubs with guarantees in there about game time. One season of regular football under a Graham Potter for instance won’t be a bad idea.

He’s got a good injury record and it’s quite often understated how important having someone who’s a constant in the side without major injury hassles really is.

If we get a good offer, we’ll sell.

Doubt we’ll make the same mistake we made with Skrtel multiple times - limited player has a handful of good games/moments which lead us to overvaluing their services and rejecting good money.
