Premier League 2025/26

We had a throw in coach? Why didn’t we adopt the long throw tactic then.. people getting all sniffy about it are ridiculous. I saw one poster call it ale house football.

It’s almost “we would rather not score goals at all than resort to that”.

I seem to recall that the throw in coach was about faster restarts and retaining possession. This was under the Klopp Heavy Metal tactics.

When Trent was on the throw in it was more the later than the former… always seem to take an age to decide.

The throw in coach was there for around 3 years AFAIK. I’m wondering if they merged this into the set piece coaching?

Hard to believe as good as Trent was with the ball at his feet, he was the dead opposite with it in his hands

I wonder if he was always overthinking. Also, in part it would also be deliberate as it allows the team to start with a shape for the situation - i.e. nearer our goal or theirs, early or late into the game, winning loosing, etc.. I dunno to be truthful - maybe I am a doing him a disservice mentioning it the way I did. My statement should be more neutral.

Put him in a side that revolves around the front three to score goals, rather than the back four and you’ll see his output explode. He’s a top drawer player, one I’d love to have as Salah’s replacement when Sahal’s time at Liverpool comes to an end but it’s moot point now.

Weirdly I don’t have a problem with it. I remember Tommy Smith winning the European Cup with a header from a corner. Don’t recall being too upset by it.

I had to go and watch that again to remind myself just how majestic it was.

The marking though …no crowded areas in those days..

No you wasn’t, he was so indecisive on throw ins the complete opposite with his normal game with the ball, always thought it was weird.

Pope…

He looks a bit rough…

Gronnemark has spoken about how he got into it after recognizing how often team lose possession on their own throw ins. Given how many throw ins there are he thought there was a huge opportunity for teams who specifically work on how to get it back in play and reliably maintain quality possession. That was the basis of his work with us. While he will work on long throw routines they do slow the game down and so everyone at Liverpool felt it was better for us to focus on approaches that got the ball back into play quickly instead.

A portion of his work is technique to improve how far players can throw it and he’s referenced robbos specifically responding well to that. While we weren’t doing that to pump it into the box it does increase the area of the pitch available to you and improve your chances of getting it back into play and keeping possession.

To be fair it did actually work I remember prior to them coming in every throw went to the opposition after that we seemed to retain possession.

Yeah He’s cited statistics that suggest he was very successful.
