P.S. if the same happens in a game for a club we don’t like the rules will be interpreted entirely differently.

But it was handball…the game should’ve been stopped straightaway…and fk to Ipswich…but no we’ll make up some weird rule that gets a Manc goal…fixed for whoever they want to win…
A team still reliant on Maguire getting them a goal is desperate.
People are losing their minds over that Maguire goal. There is a seeming real commitment across a broad range of fans to not understand how rules work. You are not allowed to commit a handball offense at any time. Everything weird about that goal being allowed is only possible because the ref saw Maguire do that and decide it was not a handball offense (distinct from it just hitting his hand) and the VAR not overruling it.

So, does that mean this type of handball isn’t deemed to be a foul? I thought he held his arms in front of himself, the ball hit them, and because of that the ball fell to him. Just seems pretty straightforward to me.
Yes. He literally won the ball by batting it down with his hands. But the ref did not think it was an illegal use of the hands/arm so did not give a free kick for it.
As it lead to a goal VAR can intervene and challenge him on that decision, but because the ref saw him bat it out of the air, that puts disagreement in the area of “rerefereeing" and VAR is supposed to steer clear of those.
What VAR was left with was deciding who should get credited with the goal. Because of the rule that no goal can be scored if the goal scorer touches the ball with his hand in anyway that would have meant the otherwise non-punishable contact with the hand NOW becomes a handball. So whether it was a Maguire goal or an own goal wasnt dictating whether a handball gets ignored or not, but whether something they had already cleared as being a handball somehow got turned into a new special class of handball offenses.

I think the problem most people have is ‘the rules’ have so many nuances and are open to abuse by corrupt officials. For instance, how can a bloke sitting in a studio know if there was intent or not?
That’s just one example, there’ll be many more where they can put their own spin on things and arrive at the decision they want.
Anyone who still believes the game is refereed fairly in this country is delusional.

I think that no one can give a good answer to that, something that matches the influence we see it have, is why there is so much dissatisfaction with it.
There was one case last year or the year before where Webb explained one of Oliver’s decisions by acknowledging Oliver didnt have a clear view of an incident that resulted in a contentious decision, but that it was right to still not have VAR get involved because “we want the decision to stay with the ref on the pitch”. Even when he cant see what happened? That is madness. No one can make that sort of attitude align with any sort of argument for the case of what VAR is actually for.

It came as no surprise to me when I learned Barrott is from Yorkshire. It did make sense of things though.
