Can I just interject… I’ve got a normal life here too! We all have. Going to watch my lad play footy soon. Played out his whole life, decent midfielder, but after Allison’s header he decided to give goalie a whirl and he’s taken to it like a duck to water.
So you admit they wrote about him during his, and their time, thus being a contemporary record i.e. current eyewitness account, i.e. Valid and documented evidence from the actual time of Caesar. But you’re using what basically amounts to scholars papers about those writings written lated to say that they’re now hundreds of years removed while the gospels are closer in time to the period of Jesus so they provide more evidence. That’s laughable.
“Undoubtedly a madman”.
What us your definition of a “madman”? Is it someone who suffers with mental illness, as traditionally described? Stigmatising language that belongs in the dark ages.
There is zero evidence to suggest that Hitler had mental health problems. Zero.
But the need for rationalisation or explanation of plain evil must lead to the logical conclusion that he was a “madman”.
He was a narcissistic personality disordered evil cunt, and your lazy description is insensitive at best and stigmatising at worst.
As pointed out earlier in this thread. Maybe you didn’t read it.
Calling Hitler a madman is of course a shorthand word, that many have used to describe a historic figure, commonly regarded as one of the worst people in history.
One thing that is confusing to me is that you say there is zero evidence to suggest Hitler had mental health issues, but then you proceed to diagnose him with a mental health issue.
Narcissist Personality Disorder, in case you don’t know, is a form of mental illness, according to DSM-V, which is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
As for sensitivity to mental illness, I have been though a lot with my own daughter in that sphere. She regularly sees a counselor and takes meds to manage her mental health issues. There was an awful time not too long ago when she was suicidal and needed to go into an intensive residential program, then a day center program for a few weeks, until she was well enough to come home and resume normal activities. I am thankful she is now in a better place, doing well in her senior year as a student, and working at a part time job she loves. Still, it is a day by day sort of thing.
@Mascot the Mic dropping gif is unhelpful, and takes the conversation in a juvenile direction. This is the sort of stuff I had in mind earlier when I said the danger of participating in this thread is that respect is on the wane. Unfortunately it seems that discussing religion is bringing out some sort of zero sum game with you. I’d like to think that if we knew each other in real life we would have a pint, a laugh, watch the match, and talk bollocks about how the team was doing and so on.
Lowton is clearly an educated fella. We are all richer when it is like that. Still, what he is saying is absolutely not the last word on the matter. It takes it further than my initial pass, but it is very far from the mother of all rebuttals.
The question is, “Did Jesus Exist?”
My viewpoint is there is lots of documentary evidence for the life of Jesus, compiled first and foremost in the biblical account. It was written by contemporaries, eyewitnesses, and others within a few decades of his death. It’s remarkable, and as such, documentary evidence for the life of Jesus stacks up much more favorably than for many other people of antiquity.
Still, let’s imagine a world where all that curated evidence is inadmissible.
Is there any extra-biblical, documentary evidence, to suggest that Jesus existed?
Yes, yes there is.
If you want to enjoy your mic dropping moment as the final word, then please do not read this. However, if you want a detailed scholarly opinion, enjoy.
Are you a psychiatrist or psychologist? It’s an interesting subset but not the thrust of the conversation in hand.
Still, I understand the need to be more careful in using words like madman. If you think it is not appropriate, as shorthand, to say that of Hitler, within the context of a conversation such as this, then fair enough.
Oohhh…Monty Python could write a film about him getting confused for the other Robert Van Voorst. Lowton_Red accidentally quoting scenes from Backdraft in this thread.
Redoverthewater, sorry to hear about your daughter and I get it that your faith means a lot to you especially when it can comfort you obviously in testing times, fair play to you for arguing with the smug godless lot who do nothing but wait for the virtue signalling to attack an individual, tbh I think it’s disgusting but the amount of toxicity here since TIA closed has been growing , where people basically state they don’t give a shit if the unvaccinated die and one who constantly says about right wingers dying etc is a disgrace , I remember on TIA before it finished reading the American politics one , when some trump supporters were having a boat protest and the vile person said he hoped they all died and didn’t care if children on those boats died, what a shitty and scummy person that person must be, but sadly reason and respect matters not anymore, everyone wants to just argue and have a certain vileness in general, and here it’s given free reign
Compare our site to any other Liverpool for football forum and although I am biased this is one of the best forums because of the lack of toxicity. As a mod in comparison between TIA and TAN the difference is stark. Limited posts are deleted, in just over a year of running just 1 person has been banned.
This forum is a community/family and feels like it. Sure there are the occasional fights and heated moments but thats to be expected. On the whole conversation is civil and different opinions tolerated. On occasion we will at times have someone making an idiotic/distasteful comment. But thats no different to a Anfield. One moron in the crowd does not reflect the supporters. Tried to find posts about someone not caring if the unvaccinated die, and I cant (did several variations of search).
A topic like religion is always going to turn heated. I imagine even on a Christian forum debate about the documentary evidence of Jesus would be a heated topic. Although it is heated, its actually good debate. People taking the time and effort to make their case. I like reading different views and things that challenges my perceptions. @RedOverTheWater, @wyld.at.hrt and others have made some good arguments. In truth of agree with aspects of what both sides have written , and disagree with aspects both sides has written. Its not black and white.
I know you consider TIA/TAN as being left wing. That’s however a natural consequence of the demographic of fans. I would guess many football forums will display a similar slant. Its the nature of the beast. If you log onto a say an environmental website forum, members will likely be left learning. If you log onto a finance forum you are unlikely to get as many socialists. Thats simply the population, rather than mod team pushing it one way or another.
Having said that I really like reading different views, the last thing I want is for TAN to be an echo chamber. In fact one of my biggest fears when I set up TAN was people would no longer debate with me. or be scared to call me a tool . But I am glad that has not been the case.
I understand that ISMF,. And I also appreciate the world is a crazy place now , and sadly it’s going to gets lot crazier imo, and I also appreciate the sentiment of this place being like a family extension, think I’ve had the fortune of debating with a lot from Tia from 2009 if not before on every issue imaginable and all in all it’s been informative, educational from a different pov and when all of it simmers down we are here for a few reason obviously the main one is Liverpool, but also to share thoughts and sometimes even help people out with advice and to share jokes.
And I get that it’s a hard mix of supporters, which I understand that everyone’s upbringing is different and that adds to the variety of views etc…probably just a bad day for me today (been quite a few of them lately) anyways apologies for being narky
