If your starting concept is to say the whole Bible is equally authoritative for Christians today, then I fundamentally disagree with that. It is not cherry picking at all. Christians are new covenant people.
With that said, Jesus said to love your neighbor as you love yourself. If I want to covet my neighbors things then it seems like I am falling short of the new covenant teaching of Jesus there.
Currently, I am talking to at least four different people in this thread!
I am trying to answer, in good faith.
If you want to see what I think, read above, when I messed up the multi quote in the broken down questions Quicksand set forth. I think it was post 1050.
@RedOverTheWater so to be absolutely clear here, you think the bible is divine and so by definition it all comes from god? If I wrote it, itâs obviously not divine. For reference, my mum believes that every word of the bible is true and wonât discuss the ramifications of this.
Does she have to though? Is there room for everyone to believe or not believe in whatever they want, provided it is not impacting negatively on anyone else?
Atheism seems to me to be a challenge for some people. The constant question is âprove God exists if you believe in him/her/themâ
There are few believers asking atheists to prove God doesnât exist?
I donât know that thereâs not a god under a rock on the western shores of the east continent on the 4th moon of Jaglon Beta. But my unicorn needs feeding so Iâm off. It has solid platinum ears BTW.
No
Your explanation isnt really clear at all.
You dont believe so it doesnât exist.
Fair enough.
I dont belive in Mars, therefore it doesnât exist.
It is so basic.
The burden of proof is on the person who proposes that something is true.
In your example it can be proved beyond reasonable doubt that Mars exists.
Therefore, not believing in Mars is illogical.
It cannot be proved beyond reasonable doubt that God exists.
If it could, Mascot, Klopptomist and I would believe.
On a personal note, with regard to burden of proof, I feel absolutely no need to prove anything to anyone about Godâs existence. Furthermore, I canât. Itâs a matter of faith. If it was a matter of proof, the whole thing would be resolved easily and definitively.
Look
I couldnât really give a toss what you believe or donât believe. Or @Klopptimist or @Mascot
Thats the honest truth.
My interest in this piqued when @RedOverTheWater was questioned about his view on how Jesus valued women. I asked if anyone else had studied the Bible as he had, and was told of a thirty year interest which didnât amount to studying to be fair.
Thus, my opinion is that regarding Jesus views on womens status is best addressed by @RedOverTheWater as he has studied the text. From a historical if not a theological viewpoint.
I find it interesting how the atheists are looking for proof when they KNOW that God doesnât exist. Why are you so bothered?
You really are obtuse.
We donât know that God doesnât exist, we do know that there is no evidence that he/she/it does exist, therefore we assume that it doesnât exist. Thatâs how everyone deals with the universe. We donât spend all day thinking about all the possible things that might exist, we live in the world that we know exists.
I am bothered because the majority of humanity still believes in a supernatural being for which there is no evidence, and this belief is holding us back from moving forward into a brighter future of logical understanding of our universe and our place in it. These beliefs, coincidentally, are the basis of a number of evils in the world including the subjugation of women and the oppression of homosexuals. Therefore I look forward to the day when we shake off these superstitions and see ourselves and our universe as we really are.
As I said, I really donât give a fuck what you believe or disbelieve
I just think its interesting that you are questioning a scholar on the Bible and looking for proof?
Maybe allow him the space to voice his knowledge on Jesus (if you believe he existed) and on his stance on women.
