Humanists don’t like the Pope. Color me shocked!
I don’t like the fact that he thinks that people who don’t believe in God are less moral than those that do.
Is that a belief you share ROTW?
I think you will find both religious and irreligious people who are all over the moral compass.
My take on religious people who are abhorrent, morally speaking, is that their religion is likely a convenient vehicle for their immorality and there are other ingredients in the pot besides religion that cause the behavior, but a religious ‘veneer’ helps them.
A huge case in point would be how Christianity has been hijacked by amoral political leadership in America. They are not representative of holding a proper faith.
Yes, exactly. This has been true throughout history.
This Pope sees fit to state, right at the beginning of his papacy, that non-religious people are less moral and have less mercy and meaning in their lives.
This is only sowing the seeds of division.
I honestly haven’t seen the quotes, I assumed they were old.
If he has said that since becoming Pope, it doesn’t sound like he’s building bridges and seems ill advised.
Peace to you my friend. And thanks for the Predator boots and the hotel room mini bar! Well played for going back home to look after your sister at the height of your power as a player. That act of kindness, and humanity, shows your moral compass is spot on.

He’d be a fairly shit Pope if he didn’t think that.
Then what’s the point of the Good Samaritan story?
Here is the full quote:
“Even today, there are many settings in which the Christian faith is considered absurd, meant for the weak and unintelligent. Settings where other securities are preferred, like technology, money, success, power, or pleasure.
These are contexts where it is not easy to preach the Gospel and bear witness to its truth, where believers are mocked, opposed, despised or at best tolerated and pitied. Yet, precisely for this reason, they are the places where our missionary outreach is desperately needed. A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society.”
What’s the point of anything?
Is that the bit that is meant to be critical of the irreligious? It’s more a comment on false gods. I did find another section that seemed to make reference to Nietzsche, which I found quite curious.
Apparently, yes.
Although I disagree with the necessity of religion to lead an ethical life, I can’t help look at the state of things and wonder if some people can’t help but be selfish/cruel without some kind of fear of eternal punishment. There’s a real “fuck you, I got mine” nihilistic attitude prevalent in society these days that’s literally leading to the destruction of our planet and making life worse in general.
On the other hand, what are religious movements effectively doing to combat this despite being in powerful positions? Not much positive as far as I can see. Maybe if they stood for the virtues they like to preach we’d be in a better place. It’s why I had some respect for the last Pope.
Its just a good story?
Aren’t they all false?
I’m tempted to quote Karl Popper on that one, in that the existence of a god or gods is not a scientific question as it is not subject to the test of falsifiability. If it can be disproven (or proven, such as the case of money, for example) then by definition it can’t be a god.
Ah ok.
I’ve absolutely no idea what you just said, but thanks anyway
Oh, wait until I have had a few, and I’ll start quoting Nietzsche at you in the original German!
