Arenât most wars and military actions based on the same false information and misinformationâŠ?
Just because a bad thing is done by others, doesnât it make it any less bad if I do it? Itâs all about the truth, our values and principles. If we canât defend the Ukrainians, and my heart is bleeding, then we should at least defend the truth together.
defend the truth by exposing the lies said by the other side⊠not by blocking it off entirely
They no longer need to be uncovered, they are already there for everyone to see and hear.
My opinion is that we must not help Putin to spread his propaganda.
Just not sure on this.
Iâve seen the depths that misinformation can damage (esp w.r.t my country) , but I still would rather it be debated and rebutted rather than risk it going into underground social media forwards etc etc etc.
For me, Itâs better if the devil that i see is better than the devil i donât.
I donât understand how you get the idea that we donât see that?? We hear every official statement coming out of Russia. I think you are confusing something there. The only thing we donât have to hear anymore are the lies that Ukraine has to be denazified and that the government is all drug addicts etc.
Only the Sith think in absolutes
Wouldnât it be better to allow RT etc to be broadcast but only as a +1 (delayed feed) channel that would allow the screen to be split so that an independent broadcaster could show their claims to be false? Much like Ros Atkins does.
HmmmmmmmâŠ
RT on 1 side of the screen
and this guys picture on the other side
There was a time I agreed with this. I am the type of person who likes reading opposing views/news outlets to understand the other perspective.
But my views in recent years have changed. On TIA we never banned/ forced view points. There were a couple of posters I thought highly of who sadly went down the antivaxx route. Our approach was as you described. Let it be debated, let common sense shine through. What happend was the opposite. Views got further entrenched, instead we saw more people starting to be swayed by the disinformation. We took difficult decision that the forums could not be used to spread disinformation the likes of David Ickle was advocating. As mods we debated a long time over this topic. We didnât want views driven underground. We wanted the forum to help educate. But we started seeing the trend of people doubting science based on what they were reading on TIA. We felt we could not facilitate this. It was irresponsible.
The likes of Fox News and certain news outlghts are a blight. Their objective is not to bring a different perspective. But outrage, muddy the waters, cause distrust and obfuscate the truth. They provide a false narrative that views are not a fringe perspective but mainstream. We have seen in the UK and US that they divide society.
The news is fundamental part of our democracy. They help hold the government to account. We should be be weary of news outlets with vested interests to subvert democracy.
Agree with most of your post but it must be borne in mind, in relation to the above excerpt, that much of the media is owned by the billionaire elite and serves only to push the billionaire eliteâs agenda.
In recent years I trust the FT, The Atlantic and to an few very good reporters at the BBC (Ross Atkins, Lewis Goodall).
Most news outlets are pretty superficial lacking proper journalism or questions. But there are a few good reporters with all the major outlets in the UK (BBC, SKY, C4, ITN)
Journalists from around the world who are still in Moscow or other Russian locations reporting now risk being arrested and imprisoned for using a âwrong wordâ. This will now cause many to stop reporting.
The new law in Russia means that even foreign Journalists can be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison if they donât report what the Kremlin wants.
maybe arresting is the wrong word, but what do i know
Can anyone explain âvilla of nightingale droppingsâ?!?
Sounds like they have seized the properties
