Could be prisoners or it could be deserters:

Ukraine has captured very many though. Question is more if there are tank crews enough.

 Nice gesture but way too little and a bit too late.

I mean seriously? The only positive thing about it is for me that they don’t seem to assume a nuclear attack and then we’re all still there. Otherwise I think it’s absolutely outrageous in this situation.

I think it is an example of the Russians not truly understanding the possibility that their place in the world has been permanently altered. Organizations like FIFA and the IOC have been happily turning a blind eye to Russian aggression and cheating for a generation, while collecting massive revenues from Western television. That may now simply be at an end. When will UEFA decide the time is right to reinstate Russia? The reputational risks are enormous, and the material benefits rather small.

Disagree. It is just propaganda. They know they stand no chance now. They want to spin on this, how the world is against Russia and so forth.

Although, granted, I guess there is a chance that they hope this will have blown over by the time this is voted on. So maybe I was wrong and you are right.

I definitely think the motivation for it is pure propaganda. But the implicit assumptions reveal a disbelief that any shift in relations is truly that serious. Of course, they may be right, but I doubt it. The level of popular outrage is orders of magnitude higher than for Georgia or Crimea.

In fact Russia committed forces from attacking Mariupol to delodging the Ukrainian lines to the north and east (Donbass) which has bought Mariupol 2 maybe more days. The thing is they committed those troops too soon and will have to redeploy them to finish off Mariupol. When they do this … (not going to say here). For me Russia are still arrogantly galivanting around. I am sure what happened in the eastern Donbas front was no shock to Ukraine, in fact I would hazard they expected it a lot sooner. It is a worry in the sense a retreat is always risky however it could turn out to be a huge fuck up by Russia.
Of course there’s a lot of hooraa from the Donbass separists however is it really that significant?
What I see as significant is Russia are still a long way from taking Odessa, haven’t taken Mariupol, yet, and Kyiv still looks strong (also the front east of Kyiv is causing Russia enormous problems. I am no military man but dislodging the eastern Donbass front isn’t what I would have done if I was thinking for Russia. I would be shocked if Ukraine hasn’t been prepared for this for a long time.
