Thread. I think he exaggerates the guilt a bit, but this is increasingly how Germany is viewed due to its repeated attempts to water down sanctions and to block aid to Ukraine.

€27.5 billion paid by the EU to Russia since 24 February. That’s nearly 2/3rds of Russia’s annual military budget.
FWIW, the UK has also paid for Russian fossil fuels in this period but proportionately it’s a lot less. I’d estimate it would be ~€800 million.
The UK produces significant amounts of gas though. You can’t compare really imo. It would be a bit like me boasting that Norway imports no Russian gas at all. It does not give a realistic picture as it is super easy for Norway to not import Russian gas and oil.

I find this a bit concerning. This kind of infrastructure cannot be “switched” overnight. payments aren’t going to stop in a heartbeat, will take years to slowly transition to new fuel sources. this “why are we paying them” mentality needs a reality check. Have a look at the middle east before pointing figures, folks.
