The EU should change its constitution and kick this cunt out.
I’m hardly an expert on this, but apparently this would take something like 15 months at least, possibly more and there are security concerns. Again, I can’t confirm this, but here’s a link about that in German:
I agree that they should look into all possible alternatives, including this one, although I’m not sure if this would contribute as much as people seem to think.
I don’t agree with everything in this thread but it somehow explains the situation a bit better.
Very long thread, too much to post.
that many think we could just replace gas with nuclear is complete nonsense, because the gas is used for the most part industrially and more electricity simply wouldn’t help in this case.
Since we were so crazy that we don’t have any LNG terminals in Germany, it is incredibly complicated to replace the Russian gas. You can only build the necessary infrastructure step by step, help the industry if possible and if it really happens that Russia would turn off the gas, some branches of industry (especially in the chemical industry) would come to a standstill. That would be catastrophic for all supply chains in the long term. And the big question is how long we would hold out before these industries just go abroad.
If it happens it happens and many of us are in favor of it, but we’re not economic experts either.
Germany has (within 4 weeks) cut
Oil 35 to 25%
Coal 50 to 25%
Gas 55 to 40%
From RU.
It is far from obvious that the war would end if would cut gas today.
In fact, makes 41% (!) of its money from oil.
NL is the largest oil importer in the EU.
makes only 6% of its money from gas.
One must wonder why we do not hear much more in terms of cutting oil?
I think that analysis actually makes the same mistake that much of the pro- analysis does. If you cut Russian natural gas supply to Germany, the effect is not going to be that Germany uses that quantity less of NG. Germany is connected to the broader European gas market, physically as well as in market terms. Some portion of German NG demand will then be satisfied by bidding up European natural gas, likely by a very significant margin.
One of the near-term effects would be a much greater shock to the UK energy market, which is already in a dysfunctional state.
Worth noting that a significant amount of that cut is facilitated by seasonal cycles.
As already mentioned, the vast majority of gas is consumed by industry. Oil and coal can be replaced much faster than gas because unfortunately we don’t have the infrastructure to do so (for now) . Without own terminals or gas lines we get nothing additionally.
Germany is not particularly isolated in gas transmission terms. The LNG terminals in NL are connected into the network, Germany has extensive connections into the North Sea systems.
Yes, that’s true, but we have no other options and, as I said, many others are also supplied with them. Meanwhile even Ukraine.
Some countries are even more dependent on it
I don’t underestimate the impact, I just think many observers grossly underestimate how contained the effect would be to Germany.
We have to trust that work is now being done at full speed, I can’t even imagine the situation we would be in if we still had the old government. Presumably Nord Stream 2 would never have been shut down either. Etc.
Maybe it’s your chance to be Churchillian Boris - stay in Ukraine until the war is won?
Never return, never return, never, never, never, never for parties small or big, inside or out, in sunshine or lockdown — never return except to resign from government
I think thats how I remember the speech going?
