I wonder what the plan is, wait until the Russians are lured to defend their own territory then hit hard back here again?
If I am strictly honest, I think the general plan is to take as much defensible territory as possible, while raiding deep at the same time. Then dig in, and let the Russians expend a lot of munitions and men to take it back on Russian territory (war is destructive, particularly the RU way of war), which they eventually will in some months I presume. Ukraine is gambling and hoping that the offensive RU will then launch, will require large enough forces from the east to calm that front and possibly open up opportunities elsewhere in occupied Ukraine for Ukraine to attack.
That and also to shake up Russians and make them realise that they are actually at war (see above).

Of course the Ukrainian dream, which is not yet realistic, is to excange Russian territory with a Russian withdrawal from Ukraine and end the war with a peace agreement.
But Russia is not ready for such concessions yet. It is far, far from beaten. So the war will go on, because Ukraine too, is far from beaten.
But of course, this is what Ukraine wants. A Russian withdrawal and peace. They really, really, really want peace. But they are not willing to cede Zaporitzhya, Kherson, Lugansk and Donetsk to Russia. And they don’t wan tto cede Krim either, so war goes on. For now.
But now, both people suffer, not only Ukrainians, a goal in itself since the Russian population doesn’t care much about the war. Ukraine wants them to care, so they may pressure Putin for Peace which can be on better terms than Putin would ever give Ukraine.
