Russian War Crimes (Part 2)

I dip my toe into this thread every day and have a quick look at whats going on in Ukraine,so i’m no expert on this matter.

From what I’ve seen/read upto now and how well Ukraine has done trying to fight off the Russians on their own with limited weapons, apart from the tank busting drones and NLAW’s they’ve been given,at what point will they use all the MLRS and Howitzer artillery (if they haven’t already and I’ve missed that news).

Are they setting them up in a defensive position to stop the Russians advancing any further or will they be used to go on the offensive at some point,to push them out?

They have launched successful counterattacks during the course of this war, both localised in a tactical setting and on a larger scale, with those larger ones made possible by a pretty innovative defense strategy that, to me at least, seemed almost like a large scale guerrilla action of ceding ground, using assymetric tactics in a conventional army and intense targeting of Russian supply lines so their counterattacks were against Russians simply having to withdraw rather than against entrenched defenses.

They’re making gains again but also hanging on desperately around Severodonestsk so your guess is as good as mine tbh. If Ukraine can hold the Severodonestsk salient then Russia will be hard pressed to go on another offensive anytime soon and will have to dig in but without the heavy longer ranged weaponry that the Ukrainians have been asking for they will also find it difficult to dislodge entrenched Russian forces.

Turkish Airlines are still flying into Russian airports and also using Belarus airspace. I’ve just seen one flight from St Petersburg to Antalya, so Turkey must be allowing Russian tourists, to enter the country.

To add to what @wyld.at.hrt said, there is an ongoing process of countries delivering howitzers and MLRS, Ukraine troops being trained on them, and getting them towards the front lines.

We’ve already seen many of these in action from various origins. But Ukraine needs more, and needs MLRS with even longer range capability, plus more drones, more aircraft, more tanks, more anti-aircaft systems…basically more, more, more

Article 5 is all about one-for-all and all-for-one. Turkey has obviously missed the memo.
Erdoğan is a piece of shit.

More than missed the memo. Cavusoglou is threatening to question Greek sovereignty over its own islands if Greece doesn’t demilitarize them. Sound familiar? German response was the usual useless line of “work it out”. Maybe if Erdogan invades us, then they’ll wake up and start treating him in the manner that he deserves.

What would NATO’s position be if Argentina invaded the Falklands again?

They are…my step daughter went to Antayla area…3 weeks ago…full of Russians…

Seems like they changed their mind amidst assurances they will not be used against targets in Russia itself.

Apparently the US rocket system is all kinds of badass. The MLRS equivalent of Rambo and Chuck Norris put together if you read everything in this thread and tweets above. Can always hope but I doubt it’s going to be a magic bullet. Will definitely put a world of hurt on the Russians though and could very well be decisive if used correctly and protected enough from air attack (the real vulnerability here). The range and guidance systems means Russian supply would be under real threat.

All the indicators from what I can briefly gather seems to show that the Ukrainians are withdrawing from the Severodonetsk salient.

I suspect that they want something that actually works in the real world rather than the movies. It looks like Biden is happy that providing these weapons is unlikely to cause the conflict to spread. It will also provide the US with a stack of data about how these things perform in the real world.

If they are going to provide Ukraine with serious hardware, I suspect that this will be on an incremental basis. If they provide them with all the top end equipment at once that is going to produce a response from the Russians but providing these things piecemeal is more like boiling a frog.

What happens though if Russia continues to hit Ukranian cities further east with its cruise missiles fired from the Black Sea or further inside Russia ?

Russia has that capability regardless and if you mean further west, Lviv has been targeted already. Thing is though, the Russians have expended a huge amount of precision guided weapons and they can’t just go willy nilly with what they have left for what to amounts to not much more than terror attacks until they can replenish their supply and from what I can gather, sanctions have been affecting their production.

Germany commits to new weapons for Ukraine

Germany has committed to sending a range of weapons to support Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

Speaking to German parliament on Wednesday, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany would deliver medium-range surface-to-air defence systems - the most modern in its armament - which would allow Ukraine “to protect an entire major city from Russian air attacks”.

Scholz also promised to give Ukraine a tracking radar which is capable of detecting enemy howitzers, mortars and rocket artillery - as well as multiple rocket launchers, in step with those being sent by the US.

The Chancellor reiterated that the rocket launchers would not be able to target Russian territory.

It follows pleas from Kyiv, as well as German opposition parties, to step up heavy weapons deliveries to Ukraine.

More than 15 million round of ammunition, 100,000 hand grenades and more than 5,000 anti-tank mines have been delivered to Ukraine by Germany since the outbreak of war in February.

New weapons will help Ukraine make precision strikes

Chris Partridge

BBC News

The new (US) weapon being sent to Ukraine is the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) - a mobile unit that can simultaneously launch multiple GPS-guided rockets.

Both Russia and Ukraine are using similar systems in the war, but HIMARS has better range and better precision.

US President Joe Biden says that this new system would help the Ukrainians “to more precisely strike key targets.”

But there has been some concern in Washington about sending HIMARS. There were fears that its greater range might lead to targets being hit inside Russia itself, which would be a serious escalation with US-supplied weaponry.

These rockets have a range of about 50 miles (80km) - about double the range of the M777 Howitzer heavy artillery that the US has already supplied

Is there any evidence that Russia is being supplied with armaments by China or any other country, who might sympathetic towards them?
