TAN Greatest: Invention. Currently experiencing technical issues

I “raise” you Viagra.

Also, smart phones, 3D printers, Alexa, Bitcoin…

Viagra I grant you, the rest are all applications of existing tech. A smart phone is a small computer with a touch screen. We had both 50 years ago. Bitcoin is basically maths.

Greatest actor and Greatest Actress, films, could be quite interesting (if it hasn’t already been done).

Best crime fiction.
Best fantasy books, non science fiction.
Greatest landmark, man made.
Greatest landmark or landscape.

That’s an excellent idea.

We’ll go with that one… Nominations now open until next Friday.

Greatest man made structure would have to be myself.

Does it have to still exist or can it include things like the Lighthouse of Alexandria?

The Great Pyramid of Giza

Let’s see … either the Great Wall of China or St. John’s Beacon.

Think I’ll go with the wall.

Angkor Wat. Considering it was built 800-900 years ago it is astonishing.

I remember the day I actually found out how long ALL of the great wall of China is :flushed:

A bit of a cliche, but the Taj Mahal is heart stopping beautiful, and I have a soft spot for the Opera House in Sydney.

For me structure is different to landmark.

Structure is more about the feat of engineering involved (relative to the time it was constructed) whereas landmark is more about the aesthetic prominence.

Pont du Gard is phenomenal as a feat of engineering. But you’ve also got Petra, Machu Pichu, the Pantheon, Giza…so many amazing feats of engineering.

I agree. The thing with the Pont du Gard is that it was incredible when built, is still in an amazing state, is still standing, until recently carried a single track road and I’ve stood on top of it in the centre which you sure as hell can’t do now.

Should add a few modern ones I guess:

We’re getting into greatest feats of engineering I guess here though. Millau is stunning.

Thought I would give some French oeuvres.
Tour d’Eiffel
Statue of Liberty
Versailles
Viaduc de Millau

My favorites in France
Pont du Gard
Arenes de Nimes

My overall favorite before looking at others suggestions
Great Wall of China

Edit: I will perhaps get round to posting pictures of these eyesores and wonders later.

Tour Eiffel, special angle to exagerate how ugly I think it is:

Statue de la liberté, angle to show how impressive it is if approached from the ‘right’ direction:

Just to put forward one for the UK…

Really struggled to find any picture that remotely shows of the grandure of Versaille. This one will have to suffice.

Another one photographers haven’t been able to capture the magnificence of Viaduc de Millau:

The Colosseum all day long for me.

How the Romans managed to built an arena to hold 50,000 + spectators 2000 years ago, just amazes me.

The place had lifts and everything.

Plus it’s still standing despite been damaged by fire and earthquakes.

An amazing structure.
