The Vanishing - the Dutch original (US remake is ridiculously shite). Not a horror film in the traditional sense, but that one hit me when I first saw it

The Vanishing’s and The Mist’s endings are about the most horrific and gut-wrenching film endings ever. You only watch these films once and hope never to be reminded of them again.

Many suggestions here already but I personally really love horror movies especially those with characters which really became cult classics. Like Jeepers Creepers and Halloween. Some others that are more gore? but some might classify it as horror not in the supernatural sense, like The Purge, Wrong Turn, Saw and Hostel…

I am twelve, 6 years later.

There are reasons why I love Halloween, actually elements like the theme music of Halloween, its a classic now. And there is some sort of romantic notions with a killer going after Jamie Lee Curtis from a young girl from 1978 and Michael only now finally dead in 2022. And Jeeper Creepers…there is a certain romance looking forward for his return every 23 years

For me if you take out those middle four movies, it’s a pretty damn good list. But those four are some of the worst movies in any genre that I’ve personally seen.

Sorry this is the Horror Movie thread not the self confessional thread.

Eyes wide shut? Perhaps more psych thriller than horror but anyway…

We’re currently at 37 nominations, after I’ve taken out a few crap ones, and I have three of my own- Deliverance, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and the original Japanese version of Dark Water- to add.

That gives us forty, so I’ll leave the nominations open until midday on Saturday. If we have 64 by then, great; if not, I’ll trim the field down to 32.

I tried to think about other films in that ilk. Not specialist horror films, but where the theme or the way it is filmed gets you frightened, or at least, destabilised.

For instance, Scorcese’s The Irishman isn’t at all a horror movie in the traditional sense, but to see this guy quietly going on with his professional killer career, stepping up the ladders in the gangsters hierarchy, and then, as an old man, living a life of total oblivion in regards to his guilt while everything around him has broken apart, is a truly frightening sequence.

Edit: in the same spirit, I’d mention Kosinski’s Oblivion. It’s science-fiction, but the way these combat drones are set up in this movie gave me nightmares at the time. And the complete oblivion of the characters about who they are and where they belong to, is a horrifying theme.

Re-edit: has Kubrick’s Clockwork Orange already been mentioned?

Wasn’t it about a huge crocodile?

Cronenberg’s The Fly should be also mentioned if that isn’t already the case.

Oh, and another terrifying movie crosses my head : Lars von Trier’s Dogville, with Nicole Kidman at her absolute peak. If anyone wants to enjoy a great movie while being continually rattled, also afterwards for a while, then watch it!

And while we are at Von Trier, Melancholia deserves a mention as well: the whole of humanity descends into depression while a big erring planet sets up its course to collide with Earth… a highly enjoyable affair! :joy:

I have watched this one :grimacing:

Another cult classic I love. I remember there was one time I was traveling in Thailand. And Texas Chainsaw was showing. It was the midnight show. I bought a ticket and I end up as the only one in the whole freaking cinema. It was somehow exciting and scary at the same time.

I know most of you would not have watch Asian horror except Japanese ones probably but Thai classics like Shutter is one of the best ever. I will always remember this scene when he decides to take a photo of himself and found out why he has been having shoulder aches.
