The Central Midfield Thread

Possibly not at this stage but he needs to be tested against them to get used to it.

I can not think what the physical factor has to do with anything particularly in midfield. It appears to me the rules now allow hefty pushes in the back when your on the ball, and that in Europe as well, there’s nothing you can do about that a skinny midget can push you over even if your an elephant on two legs.

Aerial duels, muscled off balls… i could be completely wrong.

Would like to see him get a run of games.

Our midfielders are evidently not fit for whatever Iraola is planning. Gravenberch and Szobo are seemingly no.8s who likes to venture forward and ball hog. Macca is still alright but he is not the one to hold up the whole midfield and is better being slightly forward just like the Alex Scott role. Trey is technically alright but physically very slight. Endo is not trusted.

This could mean we need a new defensive minded centre midfielder for our season to not collapse.

Are you half glass full person?

Just asking for a friend!

I have lived through 2 different managers where LFC’s midfield goes into challenges balls in and is able to at least progress the ball forward nearly everytime.

I remembered the days when Mascherano will win the balls, Alonso will spray those passes with Stevie G playing as an AM. I remembered the days where Fabinho, Gini with Henderson will out-run and challenge the opposition midfield by grinding them down and shepherding them to somewhere safe.

Young Trey gets a pass from me as he is so young. Alexis has been our best CM so far. The rest not very impressive at all.

I thought Mac had a decent enough game overall. Nyoni was okay but didn“t get on the ball enough

I want to see that pairing behind Wirtz for a few games. Give it a chance to develop and find a rythmn. I want to see Nyoni really take charge on the ball.

Our midfield needs to, especially given Wirtz needs to be fed the ball and our full backs aren“t very good on the ball.

As things stand the midfield is less than the sum of its parts. It is not really clicking. It feels like a big name or two will need to see some bench time in order to work on getting the right blend.

And/or for all I know, maybe Iraola will be comfortable selling a couple them, and bringing his own players into suit e.g. Camara and Scott.

It’s still early days and we should reasonably expect the current players to do better, and hopefully they will as we go. But it is something to watch.

Isn’t Gilberto Mora, the Mexican kid supposed to be the one we are chasing for Jan?

On Trey, we started just bypassing him or not trusting him and that caused us issues in possession and as I said he looks our calmest player in possession, need to involve him all the time.

He is yet another AM…
