To be fair, I think they did try but whether it was because no-one was available at the right price, or because klopp asked for the funds to go on Thiago or we just didn’t raise enough money from sales to make the deals happen I dont know.
I think the situation was made worse by our first choice 3 all going out injured pretty much at the same time and so early into the season. Hendo and Fabinho also picking up injuries too made it worse so we never got any Rhythm going.
I agree with what the club probably felt/thought/hoped, I just didn’t feel good about it, I was disappointed we didn’t get some sort of cover. Even if it was yet another “Kabak”, better to do it last summer than in the last days of January. We’re talking about time and points here.
Thiago, Henderson, Fabinho, Keita, Jones, Milner… is a good bunch when available and playing in the right position. It would be a travesty if we don’t improve our defense this summer, which is the only real reason we were short on numbers in midfield.
We’ll also have Grujic back… who is adequate as a backup DM or 7th choice midfielder and offers size and some goals. Preferably we would sell him but I don’t think we would get a decent fee so might as well keep him.
There there are youth players like Cain and Clarkson who are on the cusp. Oh… and I forgot we still have Ox.
I don’t see how we improve without really spending a big portion of our budget. And number-wise we don’t really need another. If a unique opportunity arises, by all means, but I think we are more in a position to sell than to buy.
Thing is, Cain, Clarkson, Kent, Wilson, Rhys & Neco Williams, Phillips are mugs (as well as Kelly and Flanagan and so on before them). Phillips and Rhys are no better if not worse than than Smalldini and Jonesta (I mean, they are that bad).
The good Academy lads since 2011 are Sterling, TAA, Gomez (I will count Gomez as well) and to a lesser extent, Jones.
Kelly and Flanagan were decent with us. Rhys is still too young to be judged. Wilson, Neco, and Nat are clearly good enough for bottom-half PL teams. Does any academies have a better success ratio? It’s a Football Academy, not a freaking Cloning Lab.
@Thomas1195 You need to be very careful describing lads who are barely older than children as Mugs. To be at LFC’s academy, they have already shown they are amongst the best in the world at their age. But despite this the youth game is rife with mental health problems, depression and even on occasion suicide because of the immense pressure these boys are put under.
Fab, Thiago and Hendo is a great midfield, but if one of them is injured, off form, or just needs a rest, the drop off is steep. Millie and Jones are at the end/beginning of their careers and not able to play three times a week. Ox and Naby are injured too often to rely on. Look how much Gini played this season, he’s going to leave a huge gap.
We definitely need a midfielder.
