It will be interesting to see what expectations come with him. Are there too many egos running the club to allow for a ‘reset’ period giving him the time and space to do what’s needed?
I think we (and clubs like Brighton) have shown you can buy well without spending huge amounts, it really depends if Utd have finally got someone in the recruitment side who can bring in the right players.
I thought he was our first choice. I seem to remember a lot of positive vibes on here about the deal but he wanted more overall control? I had never heard of him or Slot so wasn’t really paying much attention to it all though.
He was our first choice at one point is my understanding, following Xabi, but I believe further discussions revealed he was going to be totally inflexible on the formation and so the discussions were abandoned.
Agree with this. They aren’t in the right state for a manager like Amorim to come in. Maybe he’ll be able to get enough out of them initial for them to stick with him while other areas are sorted. For them to move forward someone needs to be ruthless with the squad. It’s a shame for Amorim as he’s earned a better chance than this, he should wait for one of those.
Yes, we have a rough idea of sequencing of contact and who formed the shortlist but no real information on who was actually preferred amongst them. The best guess would be as you say Xabi. Other than that, you can imagine the club not wanting to give the impression that Arne was 3rd choice and only turned to him after being rejected by Amorim.
I suspect Amorim will have become more flexible to avoid losing out on the utd job.
A great deal of the chatter I’m seeing is based on Yoro as part of that back three.
That’s right, the 18-year-old who will be returning from a long-term injury and who has yet to set foot on a pitch in one of the most physical leagues in the world.
I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to panic about the fact that Utd might have finally got its shit together.
As for Amorim, my gut is saying that while I do believe he’s a good manager, just as would have been the case with us (more so, in fact), that squad doesn’t look like a natural fit for his favoured 3-4-3 system. Bruno, in particular, doesn’t seem to fit at all, which is hilarious for a player who is their captain, one of their highest earners, and who recently signed a new long-term contract. Hope Ruben packed his crowbar!
And throw in United’s total incompetence in all things, and it doesn’t look great for him.
I look forward to dozens of Goldbridge videos claiming that the system will be the making of guys like Rashford, only for it to become clear, a few matches later, that, surprise, the system wasn’t to blame after all.
But if he does start with Bruno and Rashford or Garnacho , he’ll be going bald when those guys run around like headless chickens and refuse to help out defensively after a 20 min period where they do.
