I think we should be happy that they are not enforcing it hard. Its culturally ingrained. People will not stop doing culturally ingrained stuff over night unless you massacre or at least mass arrest some to state an example, after all.
I think they have different priorities. There are still surrender videos and indeed still fighting elsewhere in Syria.
Turkey’s SNA is after all in the middle of an offensive.
There are also as reported previously, a few columns of lost Russian forces in the deserts, trying to link up with Uncle Erdogan’s forces and/or escape to Iraq.
But the base at Tartous and Khmemim, Russians have evacuated sensitive personell and some sensitive stuff, but they still have fighter jets there, they still have a hell of a lot of stuff that takes a lot longer to evacuate. If given enough time, they will be able to though. But a golden opportunity to take their stuff now without RU being able to retaliate effectively.
It’s not so strange that Sednaya is a bizarre death camp with specialised instruments (like that abominable human body…press, I posted above) when you consider that it was built with the helpful advice of this man:
I hope the aid agencies of the world are pivoting to thinking about how Syria can be helped to rebuild. Golani seems like a potentially very different figure who could lead a transformation, but if he is subjected to the same forces we probably should expect the same outcomes.
In that vein, Israel’s conduct is deeply unhelpful. I understand the destruction of chemical weapon arsenals, but the seizure of territory is a very different action.
I so very agree and it’s what I tried to say here: HTS is scary, literally everyone in the West, most eastern states and certainly very many in Syria, are afraid of them but so far, cautiously, they have had remarkable dicipline and shown great integrity. The time that comes now, will be the true test though.
Everyone is worried about how inclusive or not inclusive they will be. But there is nothing GOOD, the outside world can do if they start pressuring them too much and creates an enemy picture that becomes a fait accomli. Reach out, aid Syrians in rehabilitation, in rebuilding, establish normal relations; that should be the goal. We in the West should want as many Syrian refugees as possible to return of their own free will. And we owe the Syrians a chance to build a state. There are few ways of governance that could be worse than the Assad State. As in literally very few.
But right now, this is a time for Syrians to celebrate and tell their stories. To grieve and laugh. There will be clashes, there are hold outs, but the scale is insignificant to previously and the regime is gone.
I fear the Trump admin may be too hostile. I fear they will focus on stuff like killed American soldiers in Iraq and justice for them and blah blah like that. But we’ll see.
So far they have destroyed Assad’s remaining air force, triggering many questions from Syrian rebels as to why they didn’t do that when Assad was in charge. Then missile production site Assad shared with Iran yesterday (triggering also many questions regarding why they were okay with Assad having the facility).
Now Latakia harbour.
The Israeli strategic communication is absolutely awful.
Translation of the agreement. It looks funny, because Ragip Soylu, the journalist, has made his own notes over their names. So no, no one is called “The sheik is not stupid”
Meanwhile, the Israelis seem to have gone full retard (how do they think this looks to the new incoming government in Syria, that was not looking for a fight ?): https://x.com/Rebel44CZ/status/1866181373955875326
