Gaza truce to take effect at 8.30am local time on Sunday – Qatar
Sadly Netanyahu just confirmed your right. He says Israel ‘reserves right to resume war’ and calls first phase a ‘temporary ceasefire’.
Already backing away from the intent.
That is basically the deal - first phase is temporary, Hamas keeps some hostages, Israel retains the threat of attack. The second stage is the open-ended one.
The problem here is the intent. The ultimate goal should be peace, but Netanyahu’s messaging is justifying actions for its future failure.
It’s like a bank offering a mortgage with on hand, while openly planning the foreclosure with the other - they’re not invested in the success, they’re positioning themselves to take the house. If you make an agreement, and all you talk about is the termination options…you have to ask is the deal made in good faith.
For me stating they can go back to war if phase two stalls (the opposite to what Biden said) is like a bank already scheduling the auction while the ink on the mortgage is still wet, he’s crafting narratives to justify a return to war rather than working toward peace.
I mean it’s blatantly obvious that Israel will continue occupation and war, no matter what the agreement says or who their government is. They’ve been doing it for 80 years.
The concepts of “ceasefire” and “peace” only ever applies to what the citizens of Israel are experiencing, not what the country is doing to those on its borders.
Stepanik (Trump’s nominee for UN ambassador) just affirmed she believes that Israel has a ‘biblical right’ to annex the West Bank. Gaza has become a side show
But yeah obviously it’s the Democrats who are all for the genocide.
Abhorrent excuses for human beings.
When I hear that kind of thing, I always wonder whether these people actually believe what they’re saying, or just play their sad little role.
Which version is more worrisome? There are certainly examples of both.
Aren’t they equally reprehensible?
I’ve met people that absolutely believe it. They’re the scary ones
That must not have been a nice moment for you to meet people with such horrible beliefs.
Id say this is probably 25% of americans. Lots of RW conventional wisdom is performative idiocy. The Israel stuff is pretty authentic though.
But it has also increasingly taken off in Israel domestically in the past 15 years or so. I have told the story before, but Ben Rhodes talks of being raked over the coals for a speech Obama gave there where he stressed the importance of the holocaust, “never again” and historical persecution of Jews to justify the stance of being such a strong ally to Israel. To them that was all besides the point. Israel’s place in the world was justified by historical, biblical, ownership of the land and any mention of 20th century politics took away from that.
I grew up amongst the evangelical Christian community. The maddest part is that many are lovely people- kind, loving, would do anything for their neighbour. But there’s a huge blind spot when it comes to Israel which has been deeply instilled in them for their entire lives. Was one of the reasons I left church (many years ago), after returning from a trip to Israel and Palestine
