The Middle East Thread

Yes short term success can do this. On a longer term Iran will be forced to be realistic which can only mean suffering for Israel.
If course Iran will suffer more that will surely cause the revenge to be longer and harder.

No, most Israelis have been conditioned for many decades that the Iranian nuclear program represents an threat. That means they will support its destruction and have high tolerance for pain.

Iran does not seem to realise that they are in a real war and not of the usual escalatory ladders. They are being cut to piece meal and are unable to marshall effective militaary responses.

Is there any confirmation of that? It sounds similar to the tactic of using booby-trapped pagers in that it must have been set up months, if not years in advance.

Why do the news channels exist? I checked several channels, they are still full of sketchy reports on things happened 12 hours ago. So much ‘analysis’ and ‘expert’ opinions, but barely any information.

And the carnage goes on, when will it end?

At least, the Irish lady who was detained by Israel for helping Palestinians, was released from custody. Hats off to her for her courage and dignity.

“I’m one of those people, injustice gets to me,” she said.

“And, to me, what’s happening in Palestine is one of the greatest injustices in the world today.”

She added: “I came across the ISM and they were asking people to come as observers. Just being there I think shows Palestinians they’re not alone.”

She said she was volunteering in the southern area of the occupied West Bank, before Israeli settlers called the police on 31 May.

“[The area] has been particularly targeted by the Israelis. In this instance, a village that’s very close to my heart called Khalet a-Daba had been demolished almost entirely a few weeks before I left. It was heartbreaking.”

The rest of the interview is very informative, I recommend it.

Yes, on day 1 there was FPV attacks in Iran launched from local bases. If these were in Azerbadjan or Iran is a bit less clear, but Iran was hit hard by short range drones in the alpha strike.

Doubt they are going to get this option for a week at least. Still so many targets left to destroy in Iran. The problem here is that everyone expects the Islamic Republic to rush for nukes after this, so much of the world then, having been forced here by Israel, actually probably wants Israel to truly succeed and are likely supportive of Israel being thorough when it comes to destroying nuclear program related targets. It’s also not unlikely that US steps in now to help destroy Fordow properly.

Side point, but we see this in Europe all the times. How they speak of Russia, basically all conflicts. When you are dealing with someone who sees a military solution as opportunity well worth sacrificing for versus the irrational European post war mindset of “of course there is no military solution and everyone who speaks of one is clearly crazy” (Norwegian state department mantra, but also the same mantra you have heard in the UK, Germanay and the rest of Europe). The problem is that they are not of course crazy and in almost ever conflict in the world today (with a few exceptions), there is a military solution if you are willing to pay the cost and you have a plan.
The Rules Based Order only exists like paper money, because states generally have agreed to it, but it is not the natural order in the universive but (a beautiful and worth trying to save) a liberal human construction. It is not a Law of Nature. It is a Law for Men. But men do not always follow laws and International Law has arguably never before stood weaker today since it’s creation, as it is ignored by several imperious and powerful actors.

Europe ought to wake up and realise that the world is not pink and fluffy and fucking deal with a grotesque threat that is Russia.

You would think people would have had enough of what happened during the recent Ind-Pak encounters. That was between two countries who actively didn’t want a war.

Surely that would have been enough of a warning to know what happens when a nuke facility was targetted.

Israel just bombed Iran TV during a live broadcast. I doubt that was coincidental.

No, they had warned they would do it so it was not.

I think that tweet is totally off the mark. How can the US policy-makers be unconvinced that there’s no military solution when they have a history of military interventions? EU have always tagged along the US, and supported or assisted the military interventions. Less said about China, is better.
