Gaza update: 72k dead (more than 600 since the so-called ‘cease-fire’, and more than 170k injured. More than two million people living ‘hand-to-mouth’ according to the World Food Program (WFP):
The genocide continues, and is now spreading towards the West Bank and Lebanon. If nothing is done against that, we’ll soon have 45 million (!) people suffering from acute hunger in the Middle East (see article above this one).
(Frantzman is naive or pretends to be naive, but that is not the point;though imo I think he is a bit naive to what is inside his Israeli bubble).
Almost amusing. Failure to clamp down on the Hill Youth for years, impunity, and you expect them to be sensible and tactical. Nope. Their pogroms are getting worse and worse to the point where the IDF actually must act, diverting forces bound to invade Lebanon (which is honestly funny to me).
But yes
Warning of a dangerous normalisation of the situation in Gaza, UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini, said “impunity reigns and disproportionate actions are being normalised amid the escalating conflicts in the Middle East.”
“It is a vicious circle: the more violations, the stronger the culture of impunity becomes…failing to call out abuses and allowing the law of the strongest to prevail will rebound across the globe.”
96% of children in Gaza feel death is imminent (…)
Children and young people are living under constant stress. “They face fear of raids, restrictions on movement, and uncertainty about livelihoods and access to services,” Ms. Alami said. “This creates chronic anxiety and a persistent sense of insecurity.”
Such pressures can have long-term consequences, shaping behaviour and mental health well into adulthood. Some young people are even considering leaving Palestine altogether.
Monsters.
Good one ![]()
This made my eyebrows rise slightly, given who she is:
You know the West Bank pogroms are terrible and also highly politically damaging, when Security Hawks (she is one) are frustrated to the point where they launch that kind of heavy criticism.
Nice people ![]()
I’m not sure how this will go down, but am I the only one who is uncomfortable with the term ‘Middle East’? Obviously, its origins go back to the era of European expansionism, where the ‘Near East’ would have been the Balkans and the ‘Far East’ anything from India eastwards. This is a very Eurocentric and colonialist worldview, which is no longer appropriate today. I’d suggest ‘Western Asia’ as a more geographically accurate description of the region. I know ‘Middle East’ is in common usage, but it’s only by changing habits that language evolves. I expect to be denounced as woke, but it makes sense purely on a logical basis.
Hardly going to denounce you ! But the people in the region calls it the Middle East themselves, many are proud of it, some claim it is the centre of the globe etc.
I think it’s a hard fight for you to take on the very world and change the name of geography, but best of luck !
But sure, the name is a relic of Eurocentrism. But it is in common usage all across the globe, so a bit hard I think to remove.
There are some issues I see with West Asia naming convention though. Egypt then is not included, but the country is kind of important geopolitically in the Middle East (or West Asian if you will) region. And Georgia and Azerbadjan is absolutely not in the Middle East but they are West Asian states and so on. Doesn’t really work so well in practice I fear, unless one comes up with new more precise terminology, since it is rather problematic to include the Caucasus and exclude Egypt when it is a certain region people are talking about. It can lead to confusion, I fear.
…might be a few other issues to work through first though…
Why not start with the easy ones?
You aren’t wrong. But Middle East and its extension Middle East & North Africa have been used extensively to describe the mostly Muslim countries in that region.
It’s too much of a battle to fight over at the end of.
As I explained above, it is not as easy or as logical as you maybe think it is.
Again, common useage, but worse, Caucasus and north Africa. Be a bit generous, it is not as simple as you claim it is.
But I mean, if people want to change the name of the topic to West Asia without the Caucasus but with Egypt, then whatever. I don’t have strong opinons about this at all. Just seems kind of counter productive from my pov (I realise that Bekloppt doesn’t want to debate this or ellaborate on his logic to me, which is fine).
Call it whatever you people like, as long as posts regarding states that are included in the Middle East terminology is allowed in the new version called whatever, I don’t mind. But West Asia is probably not the logical name for it, given what I wrote above regarding geography (Caucasus etc.)
