Ha ha, social media intern.
omfg … even worse than Leo Sayer.
Someone might recognise this tune. 10pts to the first person to name the English songstress who charted with it circa 1973.
Kiki Dee
Didn’t even know she’d done it too.
I just checked and she never released it as a single. It was an album track. Oddly enough, that’s the version I know.
I can only remember the Kiki Dee version.
Ok pop pickers , here’s another one for you. Another French original , much more famous in its English version , but the question is ; in which smash Hollywood film of the sixties would you find it ?
I don’t even have to click the link as that will be Windmills of Your Mind from The Thomas Crown affair. Buggered if I can remember who sang the English version.
Noel Harrison
Ooh, I just looked him up. Rex Harrison’s son!
Another one here , instantly recognisable , but in its original by the incomparable Jaques Brel. The question this time is which long running and hugely succesful Broadway musical was it the feature song in ? And for an extra five points which literary classic was it loosely based on ?
The Impossible Dream. I thought the musical was called Don Quixote but I just looked it up and it was Man of La Mancha.
Don Quixote was the ‘literary classic’.
A reminder of a time not long past when people still wrote songs about stuff that actually mattered. Venceremos (We will win) was the unofficial Chilean anthem of Salvador Allende. He was removed from power (and killed himself) after the CIA inspired coup which brought Pinochet and his military junta to power.
British Jazz/Funk outfit Working Week appropriated the slogan and used it as the title for their debut single as a tribute to the original artist , and obviously as a protest against the ongoing terror campaign of the Pinochet regime.
Edit: Although not exactly prescient , it seems this post was serendipitous at least.
I regret not having paid more attention to him and his band. But back when he had these 2 massive hits in Germany ( Hit me… / Sex & drugs…) it felt like these tunes were constantly on the radio. Tune in, wait 5 minutes, Dury. It simply got on my nerves and I lost interest, no I decided to lose interest. What a mistake !!!
Reasons to be Cheerful (Part 3) is one of the best all time tracks.
Class
True. And I was lucky enough to find the 12" Vinyl at a flea market years ago.
